Latest Links To Vertonghen Replacement Are Senseless| opinion

Thiago Silva has apparently been added to Tottenham’s shortlist of potential defensive signings for the summer window.

PSG sporting director Leonardo told Journal de Dimanche that the club’s skipper, along with striker Edinson Cavani, will be allowed to leave on free transfers when their contracts expire in June.

Bleacher Report understands that this has drawn our interest to Silva as we primarily look to pick up free agents or loans.

Although it is likely to be a tough window in which to do business, centre-back is somewhere we will look to recruit with Jan Vertonghen and Juan Foyth seemingly with one foot each out of the door already.

I wouldn’t see any sense in effectively replacing Vertonghen with Silva. The Brazilian will be 36 by the start of next season and would inevitably, coming from PSG, bring with him much higher wage demands.

Silva was regarded as one of the best defenders in the world at his peak – probably a level up on Vertonghen – but all things considering I would rather keep SuperJan than gambling on a has been.

Silva would have to adapt to a new league, culture, and defensive partner, whereas Jan has all that mastered. I still think the time is right for the Belgian to move on and us replace him, but not with Silva.
