Just How Dreadful Was Steven Bergwijn Against Liverpool, Then?

By The Boy -

Context is everything and if one were to start randomly exporting individual player stats from our trip to joyous Anfield, then there wasn’t one man in the Spurs squad who came out of things particularly well, bar Heung Son-Min. I’m Pierre Hojbjerg’s number one fan – and he had a horrible night.

The Bergwijn abuse I’ve addressed earlier. It stems from that morass of people on social media, of which very few have any value to add to any discussion. However, lurking in even darker corners of the Interwebs we can find football data, which if we look it at reasonably, can suggest all manner of insights.

Where Bergwijn went wrong, was attempting to do the stuff that fans tend to warm towards. In his 77-minutes, the Dutchman had two shots at goal, neither on target. Steven tried to cross the ball – that wasn’t successful. He made 18 challenges and only won the ball on 5 occasions. I could go on, a list of petty misdemeanours that if taken into consideration by an unreasonable drunk, could amount to high crimes indeed.

My Pro Tip for people like this is stick to watching MOTD. They take out all the duff bits, and serve up nice, bite size pieces that don’t require any understanding or lord forbid, tolerance.

EDIT I am given to understand that Steven has now put a limiter on his Instagram account. What delightful people we have amongst us.

Sending abuse to a player’s personal social media account, due to their performance, is contemptible. The margins between being a hero or a villain are very slim. Another 6 inches and he would have been a hero (or John Holmes!)

All joking aside, the boy created his two chances due to excellent off the ball movement and awareness. Yes, unfortunately he missed them both, but his energy was excellent, and he put in a huge amount of effort tracking back and covering Ben Davies, to help the team.

With young players like Bergy you must expect ‘growing pains’, but the boy is quick and he has skill, he just needs a little more confidence and composure in front of goal to become a really excellent player.

Sending personal abuse to Stevie on his personal social media is absurd and unpleasant.

Normal adults should be able to discuss the merits or flaws of a player without directing personal abuse directly at the individual.

I expect him to never make mistakes, my main concern is a lack of output at the sharp end of the pitch. He creates very little and scores not very often. He seems a bit ponderous, always needing an extra touch or time to adjust his body which he doesn’t get in the PL.

I hope he gets better but at the moment I see our wide players as an area in desperate need of improvement.
