According to journalist Paul Brown, there is a player who is eager to return to Tottenham Hotspur, but his career at the club seems to be over.
Harry Winks joined Sampdoria on loan in the summer after falling out of favor under manager Antonio Conte at Spurs.
Initially, Winks struggled to make an impact in Italy due to ankle issues.
However, he has since become a key player for Sampdoria this season. In a recent interview, Winks acknowledged that the loan move has been beneficial for him and that it was a good decision.
However, he also expressed uncertainty about his future.
A report from Football Insider last month suggested that Sampdoria are keen on signing Winks permanently for a fee of £22 million.
With just over a year remaining on his contract at Tottenham, the club could potentially sell him and raise funds for their transfer kitty.
Paul Brown believes that while Winks would 100% like to return to Spurs and prove himself to the next manager, his career at the club is hanging in the balance.
Brown stated that Winks has been unable to convince multiple managers that he deserves a regular starting place.
He told GiveMeSport:
“Winks is in flux. He has not been able to convince a series of managers now that he deserves a starting place.
“I’m 100% sure he wants to return and try to prove that to whoever comes in.
“But he’s facing an uphill battle and has a lot of people in front of him at the moment who the club have invested more money in.
“So, it could be that we’re seeing the end of Harry Winks at Spurs.”
As a result, it appears that the end of Harry Winks’ tenure at Tottenham may be on the horizon, despite his desire to return and prove himself to the club’s next manager.
Tottenham have still not appointed a replacement for Antonio Conte who was sacked in March. After they suffered the setback on their pursuit of Julian Nagelsmann, they are not forced to look elsewhere with the likes of Brendan Rodgers, Arne Slot, Julen Lopetegui and Thomas Frank among those recently linked.
