Jose Mourinho joins Steve Bruce at the head of the next manager out market

By Bruce Grove -

You get your club to a cup final and are still in the hunt for a top-four finish and yet you are joint-favourite to be the next manager to leave their club. Jose Mourinho must be wondering what the hell is going on.

It is all about standards and expectations. Jose was brought in to bring success to Tottenham and the way this campaign is unfolding, that is starting to look unlikely.

It has been a terrible week so far and when that happens, as it does to most clubs, then the reaction can be a little hysterical and that is probably what is happening right now.

Daniel Levy is unlikely to sack a manager just before a cup final and that can still get them into Europe next year and of course, there are the financial implications to consider as well.

Levy may well have been forced into taking drastic action if the fans where in the stadium, but they are not and that means the chairman is probably immune to the strong feelings amongst the fanbase.

Anyhow, the bookies certainly feel that Mourinho could be on his way sooner rather than later making the Portuguese joint-favourites to be the next manager to leave alongside the beleaguered Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce, at odds of 3/1 with the majority of the bookies.

Next comes Sam Allardyce at 8/1 and Ralph Hasenhuttl at 10’s.

So, not exactly odds on but the fact that he is joint-favourite gives you an indication of the trouble that Mourinho is in. The pressure is certainly on and a loss to Aston Villa in the next game will most likely see those odds drop even further and it would not be a surprise to see Jose go odds on.

I was following the logic that we can’t shift everyone immediately. But you’re probably right. Aurier is unreliable and Sanchez even more so. Both players who may – eventually some day maybe – learn to be useful, but not players you would build the team around.

Sanchez and Aurier as well. Bring in another CB and RB. Promote Tanganga to regular RB and Rodon regular CB.

Barry Fry more likely based on what we could afford after sacking Mourinho. “Levy you genius!” as the Levyologists would say.

If one club could effectively end the career of one of the managerial greats, it’s Spurs.

I’ve never been a fan of the José appointment and have wanted him out since day one. I’d say the League cup final is the only things that’s saving him so far and as much as a trophy would be very welcomed the club can’t continue to operate this way!
If and when José goes, Levy must fall on his own sword too. The stadium is amazing, we’ve evolved a lot under Poch but the “next step” has been a complete failure. José buys success and always have, fundamentally we have been a club that buys cheap and sells high but through the nears success we had under Poch we developed some players so well that had the right support players been bought we’d have likely won the league and had a real shot at winning the Champions League.
Now we are a broke team (in modern day standards), we have a manager who doesn’t develop young talent and we’ve fallen ten steps backwards to the point we no longer have an identity.
One trophy and a fantastic stadium isn’t enough in 20yrs under Levy, it’s time he and José got moved on and we find an identity again and start over!

Davies is a solid player but the issue is he’s not a left back anymore. Given the evolution of the game and how fullbacks have basically become wingers Davies just isn’t capable of that. What he does posses in great concentration and reading of the game and he’s a leader, therefore if we played him at left centre back in a back 3/5 and Regulion at wing back we’d be solid down that side

We could mathematically win the Premier League if every other team just gives up now.

Well when you put it that way Bruce it sounds like this season has been a triumph. Every cloud and all that…..

Agreed, Eddie. I don’t recall watching games where he just wasn’t trying, unlike the following yesterday. Dele, arms flung out as another Hollywood flick goes wrong and he turns to amble back into position watching the ball that he lost make its way into our penalty area. Or Aurier, stranded upfield after another unproductive surge, strolling back, hoping Sissoko will cover his absence. Or Dier, clumping into the back of an opponent giving away a needless free kick in a dangerous area. And having the cheek to get angry with team mates when he is at fault. Or Sissoko, running along beside an opponent as he cruises into shooting range, but not bothering to put in a challenge.
We can’t get rid of all of them at once, let’s prioritise the lazy ones first.

I don’t hate Davies. He makes me feel little other than boredom. He’s not fast, strong, shins his crosses and any decent team targets his flank, when he plays.

As long as we have to babysit our fullbacks, we can’t play as effectively as we’d like.

I notice Davies’ name is usually mentioned in connection with players who must be got rid of,but surely not for the same reason as the others.

For me he is an honest pro who tries to give of his best.He is just not good enough for us and I have given him stick in the past.

100%. Drive out the wasters.

Dele, Dier, Winks, Sissoko, Davies, Doherty. At the very least.

I don’t think he will be gone before the summer at the earliest. However his replacement is unlikely to come at the same cost,so Levy could see an opening there which would appeal to his stingyness.Leave the same underperforming players in place, rinse and repeat.

Graham Potter for next Spurs manager?

I’m not anti Jose, but If he wants to survive, with immediate effect he has to stop picking Dier, Aurier, Sissoko and Winks. If the fans can see it, a multiple trophy winning manager should be able to!

Remember this. If Jose is sacked , then the 7 or 8 wasters who we all know should be dumped will be let off the hook, while the “New Guy” finds his feet. The same people who more or less got Botch the sack will get a reprieve.
