Jose Mourinho having second thoughts over relegated target

By Bruce Grove -

Tottenham have been linked with a move for Max Aarons for much of this summer after Norwich’s relegation from the Premier League.

The young Englishman is one of the most impressive members of the Canaries first team and there is plenty of interest in him.

Tottenham needs to sign a new right-back in this transfer window after allowing Kyle Walker-Peters to join Southampton on a permanent deal.

Serge Aurier remains the club’s only right – back at the moment, however, the Ivorian is also available for transfer at the right price and he has a variety of clubs interested in his services.

AC Milan has a long-standing interest in Aurier and the Italians have now been joined in his chase by Bayer Leverkusen.

Should Tottenham sell the Ivorian or not, chances are that they will sign a new full-back, but Aarons might not be the one.

This is because the Athletic claims that Jose Mourinho is having second thoughts about signing the Englishman.

It claims that Mourinho has had a look at him and thinks that he might struggle to produce the kind of performances that he wants from his right back.

Aarons is still very young at 20 and he is one that can be developed further, but Spurs need to win trophies and they might not have the time to be patient with him.

He just reminds me of Aurier, looks ok going forward, go a bit of pace but can’t defend!
Aurier’s performances post lock down were mainly good.
I don’t know whether is the spurs team shape, our midfield combinations or the oppositions plan but he always has acre’s of room to get forward. His end product has improved of late admittingly from a low start point.
I think he has all the right tools to be a very good player, maybe it’s a case of can’t teach an old dog new tricks, I think in this case we should only sell if we have bought a proven replacement, not “one for the future”, please take note Mr Levy.

I cannot ever imagine JM having second thoughts.
I think he made up his mind on the boy months ago.

I don’t think it would be too clever to sell serge at the moment.

Right back is now a nightmare situation, because we only have the one, and it’s safe to say we all know he’s a liability. A walking penalty kick.
Levy’s modus operandum this window given the financial situation seems to be sale before signing, which ordinarily would be the sensible approach. But given that apart from Aurier we have precisely zero right backs, we need at least one signing in that position before he can be released. And allowing for the scenario that we dont manage to sign a backup, it has to be a quality player who can slot in as an immediate starter, which will come at a price. A price that will have to be paid before we sell Aurier.
This situation worries me hugely. Right now I’m seeing a lot of column inches talking about strikers and wingers and DM’s and centre halves. RB needs to be addressed early and immediately.
