‘it’s something that could be considered…’ – Fabrizio Romano hints at Spurs ace leaving next summer.

Sergio Reguilon, according to Fabrizio Romano, is not in Tottenham Hotspur’s future plans.

Reguilon arrived from Real Madrid for £27 million, and a lot was expected of him, especially given Madrid inserted a buy-back clause into the defender’s contract.

However, he has fallen down the pecking order under Antonio Conte, so much so that the club was desperate to get rid of him in the summer. He was left out of the squad that travelled to South Korea for the preseason games, and was forced to train on his own with other Spurs outcasts. He eventually joined Atletico Madrid on loan for the season.

There is no option to buy in Reguilon’s loan terms due to FFP regulations, but according to Romano, the defender is ‘not in plans’ for Spurs in the future as well.

He said on the Here We Go podcast:

“No buy option, it is a straight loan, why? Because of the Financial Fair Play. In the FFP rules, when you include a buy option, it’s something that could be considered as a potential part of the negotiation, and so a potential part of the balance of Financial Fair Play.

“So Atletico Madrid decided to proceed with a straight loan, and if they want to sign Sergio Reguilon next summer, they will have a chance to negotiate with Tottenham, to discuss with Tottenham, as Tottenham already signed Udogie, they have Sessegnon, they have Perisic, and so Reguilon at the moment is not in the plans of Tottenham.”

It’s quite clear that Conte does not rate Reguilon and the player has no future at Tottenham, where they already have the likes of Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic as left wing-backs, with Destiny Udogie set to arrive next summer as well.

Therefore, the Spain international will need to put in good enough performances to persuade his former rival team that he’s worth spending money on next summer, which may be easier said than done under a manager like Diego Simeone.
