“It’s a scar.. it will take time to heal” Spurs fans respond to call for togetherness

By Bruce Grove -

It has been a rollercoaster of a week for Tottenham fans who saw their team lose two games and then return to form with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa last night.

That win came after Dynamo Zagreb knocked them out of the Europa League.

The Lilywhites had started this season hoping to end this campaign inside the top four and winning a trophy.

They did well at the beginning and looked to be on their way to achieving their goals.

However, things have changed in recent months and their exit from the Europa League has made a top-four finish imperative.

After their win against Villa, the club took to Twitter to ask for togetherness from their fans.

Not all of them think they can trust them so soon, considering how inconsistent their season has been.

One fan said they would need time to heal and move on from the hurt of the past, here are some reactions:

One could point out that the great motivator, the one who instils a strong and winning mentality has failed with certain players that he chose to play in the scum and Zagreb matches. Players that have not risen to the occasion for whatever the reason, players that most of us do not trust to put a shift in, yet the manager chose them in crucial games, or maybe it’s just my way of thinking.

Why do we need to heal it, keep the scar as a reminder not to do it again.

..as long as these fans don’t keep picking the scab, it’ll get better.

The above is why some of us resist the notion that the nineties was the accepted default position for this club before Levy and ENIC.

For UEFA Cup listed above, I have failed to insert SUPER (UEFA Super Cups). Apologies.

Ah, Mr Grove, recently, in defence of Daniel Levy and ENIC, you stated that Spurs had never really been much of a trophy winning club and while I would agree with you that Spurs have never had a dominant period over ten years or more like Aston Villa in the Victorian era, Arsenal in the thirties, Liverpool, Man Utd and the billionaire Johnny come latelys, Chelsea and Man City, for instance, we, nevertheless, had a lengthy period where we were fairly regular trophy winners.

These charts only include the 3 major domestic trophies and the 3 major European trophies at the time (ie. Doesn’t include Charity Shield, UEFA Cup or second division titles, for instance). The period covers 1959-60 through 1983-84. I could have started with our double season, but this way, it’s a neat 25 seasons, a complete quarter of a century (and I have chosen 59-60 because if I’d chosen 25 seasons from 60-61, I would have had to add to man Utd and Everton totals)

Leading trophy winners 1959-1984

Liverpool 22
Spurs 11
Man Utd 6
Leeds Utd 6

Admittedly, only a solitary league title in this period but it should be noted only Liverpool won more than TWO!

Liverpool 10
Man Utd 2
Leeds Utd 2
Everton 2
Derby County 2

NB. Purely as knockout trophy specialists (ie excluding the league)

Liverpool 12
Spurs 10

and, of course, during this period we won the F.A. Cup more times than anyone else.

The more important question is why this club has this problem? One match against a weak Viila side does not undo the consistent lack of passion and desire that this squad has shown and they are very lucky that the fans have not been present at these matches. I do not know of any other club in the EPL or the Championship League that plays at times with such a lack of commitment to the history of the club or its supporters.
