Italian media: Simone Inzaghi Could Have Been Pochettino’s Replacement

By Ron Carne -

Reports in Italy have suggested that Jose Mourinho wasn’t the first name on Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy’s list to replace Mauricio Pochettino.

After a poor run of form, the Argentine tactician departed in November, with Mourinho swiftly being appointed as his successor.

Injuries and poor form have led to an indifferent tenure thus far, with Tottenham exiting the FA Cup and Champions League prior to the suspension of fixtures, while they’re off the pace in the battle for the top-four finish in the Premier League.

Now, it’s suggested by Il Messaggero, as re-reported by Sport Witness, that Mourinho wasn’t, in fact, the top target for Levy, as he had his eyes on Lazio boss Simone Inzaghi.

Given his impressive work with the Bianconcelesti in recent years which has culminated in their Serie A title bid this season, the 43-year-old has earned plenty of praise for the work he’s done in Rome.

It appears as though Levy and Spurs were keeping a close eye on him, but now they’ll hope that Mourinho can deliver much-desired success in the form of trophies next season onwards.

Should things not go to plan though, perhaps that could lead to further interest in Inzaghi in the future.
