Is Mourinho right to give up on Carabao Cup?

By Bruce Grove -

Jose Mourinho has reportedly given up on the Carabao Cup after admitting that playing in the Europa League group stage is more lucrative.

The Blues will face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup today before they take on the Israeli side, Maccabi Haifa in the Europa League playoff on Thursday.

This is just two games in a hectic run of matches that the Lilywhites have had to face this month.

Mourinho said via Sun Sports: “I would like to fight for the Carabao but I don’t think I can.

“We have a game on Thursday that gives us not as much money as the Champions League but the group phase of the Europa League gives us a certain amount that for a club like us is very important.

“It’s a competition with a possible group phase that gives us a good chance to go through to the next knockout stage so this game on Thursday is very important for us.”

Spurs have the need to win a trophy and soon. Mourinho has been backed heavily in this transfer window.

The special one is already under pressure and he knows that he will have to deliver silverware this year if he is serious about ending Spurs’ wait for a trophy and that is why it baffles me that he is giving up on the Carabao Cup.

The trophy is one of the easiest to win, but a team has to field a strong side to be able to do that.

I think he should really try to win it this season because other cup competitions like the Europa League and FA Cup are tougher to win.

Also, beating Chelsea is not something to be sniffed at either.

The League Cup competition should exclude the Prem. Each year a Championship side would have a nice trophy, and two sides a big day at Wemberly. I think it would make it more unique and special than it is now, trying ridiculously to compete with 4 bigger trophies and just looking like the irritating & unwelcome poor cousin.

I don’t think he plays games with levy. I think he makes things perfectly clear. Don’t pay no mind to the front of house nonsense. Levy knows what he wants and if he can make the numbers work he’ll get it done.

No we should not give up on any game, I very much doubt Jose is seriously thinking this, it’s just his way of letting the FA know the clubs situation regarding the ridiculous fixture schedule. I would play all those who haven’t featured much so far including some youngsters, it’s an opportunity and an ideal match practice for those squad players to be used, and have a play to win attitude with nothing to lose, be positive go for it.

I would expect at least 8 changes from the starting eleven against Newcastle,I’ll be surprised if it’s all eleven.

The Europa league can bring in millions compared to the Carabeo cup which I think pays less than N’dombele gets paid for a weeks wages.

He has no alternative. Simply he doesn’t have enough quality through the squad to compete on three fronts currently. Levy has known about this fixture congestion for weeks and has done nothing to resolve our striker issue, easily the most important aspect of transfers currently, yet one which is perennially swept under the carpet. Utter neglect.
Mou has inherited a Bentley but with very high mileage and knackered tyres. The blame for the recurrence to sonny’s injury lies firmly at the feet of Levy for not bringing in reinforcements that would allow both Son and Kane to be rested. I just don’t get his outlook – bring in a trophy winning manager and then not give him the tools for the job?

In these circumstances he is right yes, never seen 4 such high profile games in eight days so early in a season and with the transfer window about to close (so some squad members not risked because they’re in the process of being flogged).

Winning the league cup isn’t to be sniffed at – but the problem is we actually need more games for such a large squad later in the season. The Europa gives the squad a run out and if we’re good/lucky it’s a final and possibly a way into the champions league.
