Insider claims Spurs close to completing two ‘marquee’ signings; personal terms agreed for one

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to Football Insider, Tottenham have agreed personal terms with Destiny Udogie after Udinese accepted a £20 million buy-to-loan bid.

Spurs have agreed to pay an initial fee of £15 million for Udogie, which could rise to £20 million with add-ons. The 19-year-old will only undergo a medical in Italy before being loaned back to Udinese for the rest of the season.

Destiny appeared 35 times in Serie A for Udinese on loan from Hellas Verona last season before an obligatory purchase option was triggered earlier this summer. His performance for Udinese earned him a call-up to the Italy Under-21 team, where he now has four caps.

He is set to become Spurs’ seventh signing of the summer following the likes of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Perisic, Fraser Forster, Clement Lenglet, and Djed Spence.

However, Udogie is reportedly not expected to be Tottenham’s final major signing. According to sources, Tottenham are hoping to sign one more ‘marquee’ player before the transfer deadline of August 31.

Gazza was the best.. The definition of a marquee signing is the acquisition of an exceptionally talented, influential or popular player … You’re right if you don’t include 32 years old and above, but this is your own made up rule..

Perisic is a marquee signing. Age is irrelevant as you will see.

Gazza’s signing was massive at the time. You’re right, we were paying for potential.

That’s not what we’re talking about though. A ‘marquee’ signing has to be high profile enough in relation to the club’s status to warrant that description…

Yup, the only one in the Premiership era. Before that Gazza sort of, even though he was young.

Have we ever made a ‘Marquee’ signing under Levy? 33 year olds cannot fit the description, unless Spurs are so small fry that a 33 year old can still be considered ‘marquee’, I guess that’s the Levy mentality right there.

The first time we signed Klinsmann after winning the World Cup aged 28 he was 100% ‘marquee’. Sugar did that, Levy’s never done anything of the sort, not once in 23 years. VDV was an injury prone bench warmer at Real, not what one would describe as ‘marquee’.

So the point you’re making is that putting up a headline that says ‘marquee signings’ and the article itself saying something completely different is nothing to take the p*ss out of? I think you’re probably on your own, and nobody’s wet their bed, although it seems you might be close to doing so…

Aye Bale and Modric were not marquee… Last I can think of are the likes of Van der Vaart, Edgar Davids, Ginola and Klinsmann… They were all in the twilight of their careers though.. The OAP marquee signings club.

Most wouldn’t have called Kulusevski a ‘marquee signing’, but he’s certainly turned into one pretty quickly, hasn’t he?

So………., it was stated then? We, as readers have every right to deride the ‘marquee’ reference………..because it was made, irrespective of where it was stated (Headline or main copy). I would disagree that there is outrage though! If Spurs sell Kane to Arsenal then you’ll witness outrage.

Yeah, definitely a Levy deal.

Signing a promising Serie A Italian player is nothing to do with the Serie A winning Italian coach we have, or the DoF who has extensive knowledge of Serie A. Nope.

I think he’s proven to be top drawer in terms of chances created and under Conte, I would expect him to grow. Not wedded to him but that profile seems realistic under cheapskate Levy. Would take him above the Roma crock any day.

Re the ‘marquee’ signings thing and the bedwetting going on.

1. This is referencing Football Insider. A tier Z source.

2. The only place it says two marquee signings is the headline, which has been made up by the guest blogger. The article says nothing about both being marquee.

Outrage for outrage’s sake

These are 3 berth camping tent signings, not marquee. Marquee signings are players of the highest standard who have been there, done that. Not players who have been nowhere and done very little. They may turn out well, but would we have considered Bale’s transfer from Southampton ‘marquee’?

In this transfer window, ENIC’s paid up media clowns have clearly changed the definition of what constitutes a ‘marquee signing’. I thought labelling Richarlison one was a massive stretch, now this?? 😂

I can’t believe that we aren’t making another central defender the priority. How many wingers do we need? Lets sort the back line out first, that’s where we were let down last season.

Zaniolo probably…. I would love us to also sign a top centre back but this maybe wishful thinking.

Hitchen scouted those guys.. He specialised in Ligue 1 and 2.. Not a single player flourished with us from this league, from NoClueDough to NdomBenchy.

At 5ft 11inch, this is Contes shortest signing and the first to come under 6 foot..

Agreed.. Overrated, expensive.. Most importantly he’s not a Conte type of player. If we signed a decent CAM then we could switch to Conte’s favourite 352.. But I don’t believe Maddison would be the answer.. We need someone better.

Spent half an hour running thru old tapes/streams of Zaniolo and I gotta confess he didn’t look like a normal centre – mid . He is left sided , thats a good thing , but he played like a ball playing winger who felt that ‘dribbling’ was always his best option , most of his best action when running directly at defenders but lost possession at least as much as created anything . Am I wrong in thinking we have enough in this group and that Kulusevski looked every inch of him and more in my eyes .
Ifeel there are players out there who offer more than Zaniolo and that his recorded ‘injury problems ‘ should rule him out .
Thiago Alcantara , Bernardo Silva , Christian Eriksen , Hakim Ziyech , these types when available [ Bernardo ??] must be purchased if possible . They ‘make’ your team , they put bums on seats and frighten defences and supporters just love ’em !!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t think about Maddison; too small for Antonio! His dream is Sergey Milinkovic Savic, but he is very, very expensive.

We signed Papa Sarr and loaned him back to Metz for the rest of the season. Is he ready for our squad yet?He certainly fits the current profile at 1.85 M.At 19 he is already a Senegal international.

Are the official squad lists released when the window closes?

VincentianMagic

This is a very good signing. He is already a very good player who will only improve with another season under his belt.

For once, we are buying potential with a purpose. Udogie and Sessegnon is a useful duo to have. And this season (and maybe one more) we have Perisic and the bags of experience he brings.

Perhaps I’m being greedy, but we still need that AM and CB IMHO.

Still, this continues a much better transfer window than the norm.

With the priority given to Wing-Backs (two promising starlets for each position, plus two existing players for each position)… you get the feeling Spurs are recruiting so that these key positions for a Conte system… will be adequately manned for the next few years. Almost as if they think Conte will be around for the next few years

Gotta love the BBC article on this. “Udogie will offer more options in Defence for Conte”

Like how if he will be back at Udinese until next year.

And whats there to guarantee a) he will be ready for the step up. b) Conte will be here beyond next year

I don’t think so. This is all Paratici and Conte driven. This boy is being touted in Italy as the ‘next big thing’ in Italian football and his assists and goals highlight reels show why. I don’t think this is a typical speculative Levy punt, like N’Jie, Nkoudou, et al, but rather more a shrewd acquisition of a budding young star in the making, before his real value becomes widely apparent to all.

Sounds like a Levy deal…😲
