Doomsday scenario? Former Spurs ace says summer signing ‘will be a squad player’, he won’t be happy – opinion

By Saikat -

Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Ivan Perisic on a free transfer earlier on in the summer and the Croatian is currently working his way back to match fitness.

The 33-year-old can operate as a winger as well as an attacking full-back and he will be hoping to force his way into Antonio Conte’s starting line-up once he is completely fit.

However former Tottenham defender Alan Hutton believes that the experienced Croatian will only be a squad player for the London club.

Hutton said to Football Insider: “I think he will be a squad player this season.

He’s a player that obviously Antonio Conte knows, he can rely on, I don’t think he’s going to start 25 or 30 games but he might come on for that impact, that sub impact, something different.

So he could come on in that sense as a substitute but I don’t see him playing regularly, especially when they’ve got the likes of Richarlison, these kinds of guys, in the attacking areas.”

Perisic has proven his quality across multiple leagues and he will feel that he has a lot left to contribute at the highest level.

The player is unlikely to be very happy if he is limited to the role of a squad player this season.

Tottenham used Ryan Sessegnon as their wingback in the season opener against Southampton and Perisic will be hoping to battle it out for a place in the starting line-up with the youngster.

The former Inter- Milan star is undoubtedly a lot more experienced and more effective going forward.

Furthermore, Sessegnon is far from being the finished product and Perisic could bring a lot more to the table in certain games.

It will be interesting to see if the Croatian can dislodge the young full-back from the starting line-up in the coming weeks.

Finally… if it’s a ‘high nerves’ match… against top-end Premier or Champions League opposition… who do you want in the first eleven? A talented, very fast young-un… or a supremely fit veteran who has played and won in the major competitions. Persisic is a ‘big game player’

Hutton needs to stay in his lane ,the rubbish footballer that he is ,is still fresh in our minds …..maybe in 40 years time he can start talking about spurs since the new generation spurs supporters will be fortunate enough to not have watched the headless chicken run up and down

Firstly, Perisic is not competing with Richarlison, he’s competing with Sessegnon. Secondly, Spurs could be playing around 60 games this season, so there will be ample playing time for both Perisic and Sess in that LWB spot. Thirdly, Perisic is likely to be first choice LWB, once he is fully fit, but will have to beat out Sessegnon in order to claim the spot as his own, which is entirely as it should be. Lastly, Perisic is supremely fit, very versatile and can play in numerous positions, so is not limited just to playing LWB.

Conte has repeatedly said he doesn’t want a ‘First XI’.

Having a set in stone first XI has consistently cost us at the business end as fatigue kicks in and we can’t freshen it up without deterioration.

When are people going to realise the aim here? How many times do they need bashing over the head with it?

Incredible take from Hutton. Then again, we brought in Lenglet, so Richarlison himself might not even make the starting 11.

More cobblers from Hutton, I can’t believe I took the time to read this.

No doubt. Sess will start for awhile until he gets hurt, then Perisic will take over full-time for the important games.
