“I wasn’t sure of Jose’s tactics to be honest” Liverpool legend betrays his lack of tactical understanding

By Bruce Grove -

Michael Owen reckons that Jose Mourinho got his tactics wrong against Liverpool, and that contributed to Tottenham losing their last Premier League game.

Liverpool dominated the ball when both teams met in the Premier League this week, but Tottenham had the best chances.

They didn’t take their chances and Roberto Firmino scored a late winner for the Reds at Anfield.

The result leaves Tottenham three points behind Liverpool in the race for the Premier League title.

Owen said that title rivals will have hoped for a Spurs win or a draw, but now that Liverpool has won again, it is a blow to teams looking to beat them to the title.

He also added that while Liverpool did well, he didn’t understand why Mourinho went for 4-4-2 which gave Liverpool the luxury of always having an extra man in the midfield.

Owen said on Amazon Prime as quoted by Football London: “I think it was significant. All of the challengers would have been looking at that and thinking that a draw would’ve been a good result.

“If anything, maybe Spurs to win, but for Liverpool to win – the reigning champions – in the last minute, I think that would have been a dagger into the heart of a few teams watching that last night.

“It was a fascinating game. I thought Liverpool were absolutely brilliant last night in terms of possession, in the first-half, they didn’t create too many chances but I wasn’t sure of Jose’s tactics to be honest.

“They played a 4-4-2 and Liverpool had a spare man in midfield all of the time. In the second-half, Spurs had the best chances, and couldn’t convert and suffered a killer blow at the end.

“It’s a massive result for Liverpool, that one.”

Owen clearly does not understand tactics, which you would have thought was a minimum requirement for a pundit but in all fairness, he is not really one of the better ones anyway.

Owen is utterly hopeless. He wanders about lifting cash from Bookmakers and contributing nothing to anyone’s sporting enjoyment

Owen is totally useless as a pundit. Couldn’t analyse properly if his life depended on it and definitely not the brightest bulb in the box.

An ex-pro that doesn’t understand tactics? That’s like a taylor that doesn’t understand stitching! Owen didn’t think much of Jose’s tactics, we lost… so there you go.
