‘I have heard…’ – Insider claims Spurs could re-sign player in ‘beyond bizarre’ developments

By Mehdi Gokal -

According to Tottenham insider John Wenham, the club could potentially sign former left-back Danny Rose as a player-manager for their Under 21s.

Rose signed a 2 year deal with Watford last summer but after the Hornet’s relegation, his future at the club is uncertain. And despite another year left in his contract at Watford, he was surprisingly spotted by Wenham, warming up for Spurs’ U21s for their fixture vs Enfield on Tuesday.

While speaking to Football Insider, Wenham claimed that Spurs could be looking to sign Rose as a player coach which would also help them adhere to the squad registration rules. He said:

“I went to watch the Under 21s the other night and to my absolute disbelief, there was Danny Rose.

“I hadn’t seen any media or any story in regards to him. To see him there and actually playing was beyond bizarre.

“I presume he was doing it just to stay fit or maybe he is looking to get into coaching. From all the reports I have heard, the academy staff seem to love him.

“There is another angle, another possibility. I just wonder if Tottenham look at an option to register him as a coach/player and basically only play him in the Under 21s as an overage player.

“But he would count as homegrown and club trained which is very useful for Champions League and Premier League squads.

“He joined as a 17-year-old from Leeds and came through our academy. It’s an interesting angle to look at.

“He could come on very low money and he would come in and do his coaching badges at the same time.

“Liverpool did it earlier this summer with Jay Spearing. Clubs do this. That could maybe happen.”

Danny Rose signed for Spurs when he was 17 years old and spent 14 years there, and is now fondly remembered by the fans as a great servant for the club. Hence, a return to the North London club would only be fitting. If he does, his presence with the U21s, and the academy will be considered highly beneficial for the youngsters.

If this is true then give Levy credit for a very shrewd move to increase the homegrown quotient. We’ll see…
