There has been a lot of talk about the Jan Vertonghen substitution from last night, but not too much about the performance of the man who replaced him.
Gedson Fernandes came on at an important time in the game, with Southampton having seized the impetus through an energetic effort in midfield, where we were a man light even before accounting for Tanguy Ndombele’s complicated relationship with running.

The 20-year-old provided essential legs in the centre of the park. He showed a willingness to close down opposition and relief pressure by carrying the ball forward, much in the same way that Moussa Sissoko might do, except with more composure and panache on the ball.
By the time he’d been on the pitch 20-odd minutes, the Portuguese appeared confident and pulled off this silky heel-flick over the head of Saints skipper Ryan Bertrand, winning a foul and winding down the clock.

Gedson’s cameo caught the eye of these Spurs fans on Twitter who are excited to see how the on-loan midfielder progresses in North London.
Gedson clearly has great ability and he puts himself about which I love. Think he’ll be great next season.

This was so much more encouraging from Gedson. He and his telescopic legs could be useful. Good energy, nice bit of determination to his game tonight too.

Yo this Gedson kid has potential. Give him time, and I think he can do a lot of good for us.

-Give Parrott a chance, we desperately NEED a presence up top
-Sess played with real confidence today, Toby was class
-Gedson was great off the bench🇵🇹
-HUGE step to our only legitimate chance at a trophy
Him and Stevie b gonna be top ballers. Jose will make sure of that. YYIIDDZZ. more top ballers coming 🌚
The boy going to cost us potentially £55m in 18months, so he must be really as good as Ndombele and Lo Celso. The fact we bypass Bruno Fernandes to sign him must mean we see something special in him .
He’s a natural footballer – like Kane.
I think it was his surge up field (after Dele ‘megged the ref) that started the move that ended with a penalty. Positive, skillful lad.
