“He’s not going to tolerate that” Sherwood says Mourinho is asking for what Bale cannot offer

By Bruce Grove -

Tim Sherwood says that Gareth Bale is probably struggling to play for Tottenham this season because he cannot do the defensive work that José Mourinho will want from him.

The Welshman joined Spurs on loan in the summer from Real Madrid after seven years away from the club.

His signing and the appointment of Mourinho as the club’s manager should help turn Spurs into title challengers.

The Lilywhites have started this campaign on a positive note, however, Bale has played almost no part in it.

Sherwood says this is because Mourinho expects his right-sided attacker to play almost as a right-back, and Bale will not want to do that.

Spurs have built their success this season on counter-attacking football and that means they have to spend the majority of their time defending regardless of the position you play in the team. Sherwood thinks Bale didn’t come from Madrid to do that.

“I think it’s not their fault,” he said on the Kelly and Wrighty Show.

“The lack of game opportunity for Gareth and Bergwijn as well and Moura. We look at their stats and say they’re not scoring or contributing.

“Well, they’re not playing. And when they are playing they are playing right-back.

“Bergwijn, when he plays in the big games, they play Kane in a deeper role and Son on the left hand side. If you look on the right Bergwijn is almost playing right-back and doubling up for the team.

“Gareth Bale has not come from Madrid to Tottenham to play right-back. He’s not going to tolerate that. He’s not going to work that hard for the team doing that job.”
