Former Premier League striker Kevin Phillips has been giving Moussa Sissoko the big’un in an exclusive interview with Football Insider.
Phillips told Football Insider that Sissoko has been as big a miss to Tottenham as Harry Kane or Son Heung-min in his injury layoff. The French midfielder has not played since New Year’s Day because of a knee problem.

But that is not the biggest compliment that Phillips paid the 30-year-old. The ex-Sunderland forward went on to compare Sissoko to one of the Premier League’s best-ever midfielders – Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.
“He has been a huge miss. Since that World Cup final, he has been a different player,” Phillips told Football Insider.
“At one point Kane, Son and, Sissoko were the first names on the teamsheet. We keep speaking about Son and Kane and Sissoko goes under the radar. He is a superb player – power, pace and travels with the ball really well. He can take the ball in tight situations with his strength.
“With this big lay-off, when we do reconvene it will be like having a new signing for Mourinho. What a huge boost that will be. Sissoko is a huge player for Tottenham. He reminds me of Gerrard, a little bit.”
I’ve grown to like Sissoko, in the way that you grow to like your girlfriend’s cat – annoying at first but now you kind of miss it when it’s not there. He has shown great character to make a go at it at Spurs and is a proper trier.
But Gerrard, a complete midfielder if ever there was one, maybe offended to be likened to a player that can’t really pass or shoot.
Then again, he might not be too concerned about the opinion of a man who believed Sissoko played in the final of a World Cup he wasn’t even a part of…
