Harry Winks recently admitted that he didn’t like what was happening to him at club level as he struggles to play regularly (Daily Mail).
The midfielder is highly-regarded by England manager Gareth Southgate and that explains why he has been called up to the national team even though he hasn’t been seeing regular first-team football at Spurs.
Winks looks like a backup option at Tottenham at the moment with the trio of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko, and Tanguy Ndombele all playing ahead of him in Jose Mourinho’s starting XI.
He is undoubtedly a talented player and he is good enough to play regularly in most European teams.
His outburst while on international duty for England drew the attention of many and he had some support from fans too.
However, Noel Whelan claims that he didn’t have to go public with the status of things.
He claimed that the midfielder should have had a conversation with his manager on how things are going with him instead.
Whelan told Football Insider: “I think there’s a right way of doing things, I’m old school.
“I do think it should sometimes be, you know, with a manager, sitting down, talking, finding out where you belong in the pecking order, how important you are to the football club and the manager’s plans, before you come out publicly and say anything.
“Harry is still a very good international player, we saw it the other night when he came on, he is still very much in Gareth Southgate’s plans.
“Can you afford to leave out a player of international quality? It’s difficult because they’ve got a lot of players in that position and Jose Mourinho, you can’t really argue right now when they’re sitting second.”
No outburst fake news, are we listening to Whelan now.😂 It’s more positive to see Winks working hard at his game and taking his chance with England when he gets it.We don’t want our players to be happy if they are not being picked it’s good for them to be competitive.
I was hoping he was a Phil Neville type – in the mix, doesn’t usually start, but bang there you are starting in the FA Cup final when the first pick is injured.
Then you don’t let us down.
Seems he’s got the wobbles straight away, shame, maybe move on and then…maybe disappear?
What do you mean by good enough to play for most European teams? Are you talking about the top level or something like the French league. That equivalent in any of the main countries is about right. There is a long list of former academy players who have moved on to lower league teams and become irrelevant.
Better listen to Toby, see what happened to dele.
