Tottenham always seems to have at least one summer transfer saga. A name pops up and despite there being no fixed quotes or any true indication that a deal could genuinely be done, the story will run and run, sometimes for months on the strength of a journalist insisting that somewhere, somehow, a deal is still simmering away.
This window, Spurs have been linked with a number of centre backs. Two names that keep popping up are Micky van de Ven and Edmond Tapsoba. Lots of monitoring and interest in and other language designed to make you feel as if an agreement could be struck next week, but nothing tangible has transpired at all.
One problem is that the players, and or their agents, could be manipulating the situation for their own benefit.
Nothing reinforces a player’s value quite like a story on the back pages saying ‘So and so willing to pay X million for ace’, if you don’t believe me, ask yourself what Charlie Kane has spent his summer doing, or do you actually believe the England captain is willing to toss his Premier League goalscoring record, so he can move his young family to a foreign country?
Teddy Sheringham speaking to our sister site, TBH Substack told us that in his mind, that Spurs might take a more measured consideration of Harry Maguire.
I have to confess, I’m not a fan, and see Maguire as another Eric Dier, but the reality is this, Spurs have some shocking players in its current backline, and if Maguire were available, which given his loss of the captaincy suggests he is, could a deal not be done?
Over to you Daniel, or will we still be waiting on the next Fabrizio Romano update, this time next summer?
