‘Full agreement completed’ Fabrizio Romano gives the latest update as £20M deal is finally agreed

By Mehdi Gokal -

Young Spurs defender, Joe Rodon is reportedly on the verge of joining Rennes after a deal was finally struck with the French team.

The deal will see him join Rennes on a season-long loan with an option to buy for €20m. The ever-reliable Fabrizio Romano confirmed this on Twitter. He tweeted:

Full agreement completed, Joe Rodon will join Rennes. Deal in place with Tottenham on loan with option to buy clause worth €20m, as revealed yesterday – just waiting to sign paperworks.

Joe Rodon has been linked with a move away from Spurs all summer as he looks for regular playing time ahead of the upcoming world cup. The 24-year-old signed for Spurs from Swansea for £11m and since then has barely featured for the club. He has a total of just 24 appearances across all competitions, most of them coming under Jose Mourinho.

Earlier, Spurs boss Antonio Conte had hinted toward Rodon’s potential exit. When asked about the Welshman’s future in his pre-match presser ahead of their pre-season friendly, he said (via football.london):

Yeah Joe Rodon is another good player and don’t forget that in November there is the World Cup and many players want to play and play regularly. Also to prepare themselves for this important competition. I think that when the thoughts from the club and the players are the same we try to find the best solution for both.

But we still have Sanchez.

I think he’s a decent player given the chance. My hesitation would be that he has failed to convince three managers on the trot, so perhaps they have all seen a weakness in training.

IMHO he’s a better bet than Sanchez and Tanganga.

If he’s being moved on, along with Japhet, then I’d like to think we have someone else arriving – Torres or Skrinier would be nice.

Good move for him, regular football at a good level I would imagine. We shouldn’t have wasted the boy’s time by signing him in the first place. Very strange signing all in all…
