Former Tottenham man not surprised at yet another long drawn out transfer saga

By Bruce Grove -

Alan Hutton has talked about Spurs’ reputation to drive a hard bargain when they want to sign any player, as they look to land Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

The Lilywhites have made the Dane a priority target this summer as he nears the end of his Southampton deal.

However, they are struggling to reach an agreement with reports claiming that Tottenham has yet to meet the Saints’ asking price for the former Bayern Munich man.

They are looking to get the best deal that they can with Kyle Walker-Peters touted as a player that could be added to Spurs’ bid.

The saga has been going on for some time now, and Hutton claims that it isn’t a new thing for Daniel Levy.

Speaking to Football Insider via Daily Echo, the former Spurs defender said: “This has been going on for a long time now, it’s been in the papers forever, it seems.

“It just seems like Tottenham all over, they just always want to get the best deal.

“I know Daniel Levy, he’s very good at what he does, he doesn’t normally back down so it’s a case of that again. It just seems like Spurs have been doing this for years now.

“They do miss out on people because of the way Levy is with the signings.

“If they want him that much they’ll go and get him, it’s an area where Mourinho has chopped and changed and they’ll be looking for someone to go in and play with the likes of Sissoko on a regular basis.

“If they want him, they’ve got to go and get him because there will be other teams more than willing to pay the money for him.”

Hojbjerg is just one of many players that have been linked with a move to North London. Spurs will lose some of their targets to their competitors if they continue this way.

Less than a year ago 4/8/19 Real Betis complained about Levy haggling over the price of a certain LoCelso and refused to deal with him they were demanding £75million euro’s around £67m today. Eventually realising that no clubs would pay the asking price they started talks with Levy again,Levy then only agreed a loan fee £15m with a buy option. In Jan he signed for a reduced fee of £27m because Real wanted the money then instead of waiting till the summer. With loan fee and transfer fee he cost £42m ,£25m below the original asking price. His value is probably closer to £30m now. Another Poch recommendation returning no goals and two assists in the PL. It could have been worse we could have paid £75million euros!! PSG were livid as they had hoped to get 20percent of £75 million euros in sell on fee and got screwed and only got 20 percent of £27m.Thats Levy getting PSG back for selling us Aurier.

Forgot earlier….not only this “hard bargaining” rowlocks that is to be expected but there are quotes by clubs where the little thurd goes back and changes the deal. Before anyone says “good for the club blah blah blah” think how would you feel if you sold him your car shook hands on the price and then before picking it up he rang to say “you have to knock another £1k off”.
Disgusting little chancer.

People saying Levy isn’t good at what he does…if his ambition is to make the club more profitable he has done his job amazingly.

If it’s to make a better football side…yes, again, this is a much better team from the mid table cloggers we used to be. Spurs and ‘Champions League’ in the same sentence used to be ‘what?’

If it’s to push on and win something…no, he isn’t doing a good job.

We don’t want to do a Bindip/Citeh/Utd/Blue Scum/Leicester/Scum for their trophies compared to us.

Anyway..……..it appears that JM wants the boy so if TP doesn’t deliver will we see a famous JM quip about interference/non delivery.

There may be other teams interested but he wants to join Spurs, so we wait until Saints say yes to our bid, assuming the player will decline ofers from sides like Everton. It’s a fair stance – especially considering that the transfer window isn’t officially open yet. I’d be disappointed if we spent more than £20m on him.

Fed up at pundits, commentators and fans saying Levy is good at what he does. If that is to ‘not spend to win’ fair enough. Squeezing the life out of a deal is not good, unless you are lowly paid and struggling to make ends meet. Until the stadium, we were fine. Even with the understanding of long term loan repayments we are hardly skint, but that doesn’t make Levy a good chairman. 20+ years he’s been at it and we have 2 league cups. How is that good?

As soon as tintin transferred to inter he was valued at 69 million odd. 3rd in the league, above the ageing Ronaldo.

Hes not another bruno… Hojbjerg has been in the prem 4 years now since 2016 and hasn’t exactly lit the league up.. He is the type of player we need in the middle, just not good enough quality.

“Daniel Levy he is very good at what he does”.No he’s not. He’s managed to pi**
everyone off in the PL with his petty games and the number of good players we’ve missed out on far outweighs the dross we have brought in.
There is a huge difference in offering a lower price than that being asked, to get negotiations underway, and outright taking the pi**.PL chairmen must dread reading headlines stating that Levy is perhaps interested in one of their players.
Until ENIC and Levy go or he changes completely (unlikely),then this situation will always be with us.

His job dmf never gets the plaudits but is very important in any team to have someone to do the dirty work. Before we were linked with him I always thought he done a good job. There are better ones available but probably not in our price range.£15-£20m max

Yes will grant you that but still think Southampton are way off the mark for a bang average player. He is a holding player nothing else. I am not a fan of dl but this time he is right with covid the price should be lower.

Eriksen was down to the last six months,Hojbjerg has another year left might be a factor.

So if eriksen who was in the last year of his contract was sold for 17 million pounds pre covid does that make hojbjerg during and after covid at 25 million a good deal. Is hojbjerg half as good again as eriksen as the price suggests or are Southampton being unrealistic.

Most of the saints fans want him moved on,the same feeling we had over Eriksen.

Clubs usually have more than one player targeted ,so not be held to ransom by the selling club.It could come down to agreeing the fee or personal terms with the player that can make a deal collapse. We seem to remember the good ones we didn’t sign ,but have vague memories about the dross we swerved. Two weeks ago Southampton were demanding £35m now £25m in another two weeks maybe it will be £15m or a swap for KWP.If Hojbjerg does sign he is already living in the country and up to speed with the PL and should hit the ground running.

Don’t forget that we took Gedson Fernandes on loan with an option to buy instead! I don’t think the Saints fans care that much if Hjojberg is sold.

From what I have seen Hojberg is ok but not that special. Let Everton have him. Give this one a miss me thinks!

Hojbjerg could be another Bruno Fernandes. He was ‘ours’ 3 times but Levy fu**ed it up. Look how good he has been for Utd (dodgy penalties aside)!

IMO one of the worst protracted transfer sagas of dire brinkmanship under the Levy regime was the tortuous collapsed Berahino transfer with both ex – WBA Chairman Jeremy Peace and culpable Levy refusing to budge completely destroying the confidence of a player who expressed his desire to join Spurs when following a non descript period playing for Stoke has since disappeared into the ether. Pity because surrounded by better players believe he could have done a job for Spurs.

Called a shrewd negotiator driving a hard bargain it’s no coincidence that Sir Alex Ferguson once described dealing with Daniel Levy as more painful than visiting the Dentist. Less than complementary Messrs Sullivan and Gold condemned Levy over the collapsed Adebeyaor saga. Reaping revenge by pinching Willian resulting from the Chelsea Board holding grudges over the collapsed Modric saga.

Remember that from the frenetic transfer activity of the “Magnificent 7” only Tin Tin “Butterfly” Eriksen was a success. Currently hardly a resounding success at Inter Milan why you may ask a Butterfly because mixing flashes of brilliance with long periods of anonymity he often sits on the periphery without imposing himself on a match!!
