Former international manager reckons Danny Rose is in an advantageous position now

By Bruce Grove -

Former Scotland manager Alex McLeish thinks that Danny Rose is in an advantageous position now as Spurs look to get him off their books.

The left-back will not play any competitive football until at least January after he failed to get a move away from the club this summer.

He had fallen out of favour with Jose Mourinho earlier in the year and spent the second half of last season out on loan at Newcastle United.

His position in the team didn’t change when he returned. The club signed Sergio Reguilon instead of giving him another chance and he has also been omitted from their registered squads for various competitions.

After failing to offload him in the last transfer window, reports claim that Spurs are looking to pay him off.

But McLeish believes that the former Leeds man is in a position of strength now because he can decide that he will stay and collect all his pay for the final months of his deal instead of leaving.

McLeish told Football Insider: “I don’t know Danny, I don’t know what he’s thinking but we have seen it before, where players have stayed on until their contract is finished and been fully paid.

“If it’s right for the player to go then only he can decide that. I think Danny is the one that’s in charge of this decision now.

“It will be interesting to see whatever he finally does and you have to respect whatever decision he makes.

“We’ve seen it all too often in the past where players stay on until the end of their contracts and that is their right and their prerogative.

“Some would take a stance and say: ‘Well, is it not better getting out there and getting a new team? Make sure your money isn’t being depleted and get your career going again.’ There’s those arguments.”

When all other clubs are inconsistent too, it’s anyones to win.. Leicester have proved this in recent years, from being relegation candidates one year, and becoming champions the next.. It’s a tall order agreed, but if Bale and Reg and co can hit the ground running then certainly not impossible.

Does being inconsistent not count as a reason?
