“Fans will ask questions” Pundit Insists Pressure Is Starting To Pile Up On Levy

By Ron Carne -

Danny Mills has insisted that unless Tottenham increase their spending, chairman Daniel Levy will leave himself open to further criticism.

Under previous manager Mauricio Pochettino, Spurs become a perennial top-four side in the Premier League and threatened to compete for major trophies.

That cycle under the Argentine coach came to an end in November as he was replaced by Jose Mourinho, although having crashed out of the FA Cup and Champions League while staring up at a gap to the top four this season, Tottenham have fallen off the pace.

As per the club’s official site, healthy revenues and profit were recorded albeit with debts still owed too, and while Mills has praised Levy for the way in which he has handled the financial side of the club, he believes he must increase spending on the playing squad.

“It is easy to say they have made a lot of money but they still have to pay the stadium off,” he told Football Insider.

“They have not really made that much money. Where has all that money gone? If you have all of that money why are they not spending it on transfers and the squad? Why did they not give it to Mauricio Pochettino?

“Yes, Levy has done well in getting Tottenham to where they are financially but if they do not now spend, the fans will ask questions. They will want it invested in the team. There is another side, that is for sure. The fans will definitely be frustrated.”

As per BBC Sport, Mourinho has already hinted that he needs a more balanced squad next season, but time will tell if he is given the necessary funds to bring in the players that he believes will help improve his side.

The simple word that throws everything up in the air…… If….. If levy gets his jam tomorrow I can see him keeping it all for himself and lewis… He has said recently himself that spending doesn’t guarantee success and there is no telling if spending in recent years would have won anything! The man is either dellusional or taking everyone for a ride… Now if money and spending doesnt guarantee success, then why is mr levys number one priority to make obscene amounts of it.

As a business man he’s top notch, to turn an investment of £22 million into a probable £ 1 billion profit is brilliant. But as a developer of football teams not in the first rank.

Not an ideal time to be looking for a big pay day from companies who are likely to be struggling in the middle of of a recession. His midas touch could be deserting him, he lost significant money on Eriksen and Wanyama, won’t get much for Rose and missed the boat on selling Eric Dier and Toby when the market was hot. Ironic too that we’re drooling over RB Leipzig players Sabitzer and Upemecano. I also find it deliciously ironic that Leipzigs talent spotter is a certain Mr Paul Mitchell, wouldn’t it be great if we could have a someone of his ability working for us.

This begs the question as to how much the naming rights will be worth when we are a middle tier team. Who wants to sponsor a club who appear to have no ambition in winning silverware and who cannot attract the best players? Perhaps Levy could take a pay cut?

Yes I think you’re right that’s probably the plan. But we have to see some serious intent now though surely? It feels like it could all fall apart without a few key signings of high quality.

Levy has achieved what he wanted to with the stadium and facilities. Now he needs to fund the team. If he doesn’t there will be a huge backlash from the fans.

The stadium naming rights haven’t been sold yet, El Cheapo holding out for top dollar. If he gets 25 to thirty million a year, that over twenty years will pay off a substantial amount of the stadium debt and all his other revenue streams will be moving into top gear.
