Fabrizio Romano takes stock on the rumor linking Memphis Depay to Tottenham

By Eddie Razo -

This week, a rumor from Spanish journalist Gerard Romero (via AS) revealed that Tottenham Hotspur had made an offer to Memphis Depay. The 28-year-old is in his first year of a two-year deal that he signed with FC Barcelona this past summer.

However, with the arrival of Xavi Hernandez, Depay has fallen in the pecking order as Ferran Torres and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sees more playing time over the Dutch forward.

Despite the report, transfer window specialist Fabrizio Romano took stock of the rumor linking Depay to the north London club during a segment on his “Here We Go” podcast. Romano put cold water on the possibility of this transfer occurring.

“From what I’m told, Tottenham are not negotiating for Depay. And on Tottenham’s side, I’m told they made no bid for Memphis Depay,” Romano said.

“So let’s see what happens with Barcelona if they will be open to let him go, but as of now, Tottenham are not working to sign Depay.”

Nonetheless, Romano did leave some room when it comes to the possibility of Depay heading to Spurs. Barcelona and the north London club do have a working relationship. Last summer, the two clubs were able to work out a deal that would see Emerson Royal head to the Premier League side.

He failed at Utd because he thought he’d arrived, probably the same at Barca, the penny needs to drop.
