Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly discussed the possibility of terminating Tanguy Ndombele’s contract after the midfielder’s disappointing spell at the club.
According to a report by Football Insider, the Spurs hierarchy have “held internal discussions” regarding paying off the Frenchman’s contract, which runs until 2025.
It also adds that the club now believes that the hopes of ‘receiving a big transfer fee’ for him have ‘all but evaporated’.
Ndombele joined Tottenham from Lyon in 2019 for a club-record fee of £63m. However, he has failed to live up to expectations and has not impressed any of the managers who have been in charge of the club during his time there.
The midfielder’s loan move to Napoli this season has also been underwhelming, and the Italian club is unlikely to sign him permanently despite having an option to buy him. Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli reportedly deemed Ndombele’s asking price too steep.
Ndombele recently blamed Antonio Conte for his loan move to Napoli, stating that he was not given a chance to prove himself and was never part of Conte’s plans. However, former Tottenham player Graham Roberts criticised Ndombele for not taking responsibility for his failure at the club.
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham will indeed terminate Ndombele’s contract, but the midfielder’s future at the club looks bleak and the club will likely be keen to cut their losses.
The decision to let Ndombele go, either through a transfer or contract termination, will also free up space in Tottenham’s wage bill, which would further help them to spend on bring in new players this summer.
Spurs fans will be disappointed that a player who arrived with such promise has failed to deliver. The Frenchman might get one last chance to save his Spurs career if he can impress the new manager in the summer but the chances are thin.
