Did you catch this Eric Dier move that was pure Virgil van Dijk?|video

By Joe Fish -

Eric Dier had a strange night back at the office. The 26-year-old barely put a foot wrong at centre-back and yet conceded two penalties, although one was correctly overturned by VAR.

Prior to the last 10 minutes, Dier was acing his audition in defence and you could see the confidence returning to his game after a tough 18 months.

This goal-saving tackle on Anthony Martial was his best moment. If Virgil van Dijk had done this we would be talking about it for months.

So slick was the pass from Bruno Fernandes that Dier had so little time to react. His mobility has been criticised of late but he did brilliantly to get to Martial just in time and made a block which, at the time, retained our lead.

If the ref hadn’t been conned by Paul Pogba it might have been the moment a crucial victory was clinched. What followed next was a shame but I hope it doesn’t knock Dier’s confidence. He looked every inch a centre-back.
