Did Pochettino use Tottenham just to get a contract extension with PSG?

By Bruce Grove -

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new contract at PSG after nearly making a return to Tottenham in the summer.

The Lilywhites had considered bringing him back after the ill-fated spell of Jose Mourinho.

PSG had been determined to keep hold of him beyond this summer even though he failed to win the French league last season.

The Sun claims that he had been seriously considering a return to Tottenham at the time.

However, Spurs eventually gave up and hired Nuno Espirito Santo as their latest manager.

The Argentinian has now penned a one-year extension to his previous PSG deal and in a message, after signing, he claimed that he was delighted to have the confidence of the board.

As quoted by The Athletic, Pochettino said of the news: “I’m really very happy, for myself and also for my staff.

“It’s very important for us to feel the confidence of the club and we will give our maximum so that the supporters are proud of Paris Saint-Germain.

“That’s why we will try and reach our objectives all together, as one. Twenty years ago I was captain of this club and today I am the coach… It’s a dream come true.”

It seems he had just been flirting with Tottenham so that he could earn a new deal at PSG and that may have worked for him. What do you think?

Isn’t that just the signing of the one year option PSG triggered (or threatened to perhaps to up the compo package had Levy wanted to go ahead)?

Not news really just confirmation and affirmation of, “we are all verrrry ‘appy and great pals” despite the contractual squeezing of testicles……

One things for sure, Nuno is not gonna be at Spurs much longer that 18 months. Who knows what happens after that?

A 12 month extension to Poch’s PSG contract is hardly an attempt to tie him down for some kind of long term project either.

Personally I think there was an approach to bring him back but the inaccuracy is in how advanced the whole thing got. Questions were asked, they got answered so Levy tried to flog the job to any old Herbert who was knocking about…

That wins nothing as a football club. Yeah how would we manage without him, having to put up with all those trophies like the rest of the big 6.

A 1 year extension?

which coincides with the end of Nuno’s 2 years as a stop-gap at Spurs?
🤨

I’m guessing the plan has been laid & he will be our next coach.

At least I admit it’s a guess though – The Sun should probably print the same disclaimer!!

Lol then why did Poch personally call players to join PSG’s around the same time he was linked with a return to spurs ? He used the link with us to get and extension and also to get the upper hand over leonardo with regard to transfer

Saw this today in the mirror… Three Lions skipper will cost £160 million and the 27-year-old has ‘shaken hands’ on personal terms which include a wage worth £400,000-a-week.
Additionally, Kane is said to have told family and friends of his ‘impending’ transfer at his brother’s wedding last week

To be honest I was always sceptical that poch would leave PSG for Spurs. Let’s face it PSG who can buy nearly any player or Levy who would rather lose out on buying a player to save a million or two. Also the way levy treated Poch was a disgrace. To come back he must be a glutton for punishment ( a masochist) . Remember when he snapped at a reporter and told him I’m not the manager I’m just a coach ( because he had no say in what players to buy)

In truth, the whole thing was a wind up from The Sun that the Fresh Prince of Thin Air between his ears, Jack Pitt-Brooke decided to blow up.

Thankfully, The Athletic have cut his schedule right back this month.

No way. It was the club who decided to extend his contract with one year given Tottenham`s interest. Poch loves Tottenham and vice versa. He has stated that he will be back one day and Levy even mentioned it himself in an address after he let him go 2 years ago.

Like a failing comedian. “Hi Ladies and Gentlemen, you only play Barnsley Civic Hall twice in your career. On your way up and on your way down. It’s good to be back!”

Pochs on more money and has a board who spend big money on transfers. I’m baffled by why he turned Spurs down, if he did, and if any of this happened, who knows.

When the stars are in alignment I’m pretty certain he will back at Spurs one day

I think it is more likely that Little Daniel decided he didn’t fancy paying out a severance fee. Pooch has to deliver or he will not last long there I suspect.
