Desperate For Consistency: Astonishing Numbers From Dele Alli

By The Boy -

Dele Alli isn’t much of a mystery. That’s probably one of the most depressing factors in analysing the boy’s play. The ability is there, it’s just a question of him delivering it on a consistent basis. Most of the time when great players get on the ball, something exciting happens. With Dele, that probability has shrunk down to a ‘maybe’ or worse.

Whilst a side that one smashes 7 past may not be the most robust yardstick, it would be churlish not to acknowledge the improvement. IF Jose

DRIBBLING SKILLS

PASSING ACCURACY this was decent enough achievement. If we compare this with Dele’s 59 minutes against Shkendija in the UEFA Europa League, on 24.09.2020, he only a managed a successful passing accuracy of 69%.

TOTAL SUCCESSFUL ACTIONS these numbers are astonishing, not because they put the boy up there with Cristiano Ronaldo at his peak, it’s rather that these numbers are so better than anything he’s produced since we played Southampton in the FA Cup on 05.02.2020, where Dele hit 78% (which was also a hugely atypical achievement).

Total successful actions is a blunt metric, but that bluntness is great for a providing a no-nonsense snapshot of whether a player was particularly competent, or consistent. Scoring a mind-blowing bicycle kick that wins the game is great – but if most actions prior to that were unsuccessful – what on earth was the footballer playing at, was he on his phone?!

Only a few days left, but I’d prefer Dele went somewhere else to prove himself. We’ve always known that his talent was in there, but the interminable wait for him to demonstrate it has gone on too long.

To me Dele looks like he is one of those people who has lost confidence in his own ability. Images of him where he is not the focus show that insecurity in his facial expressions. He has the look of someone who wants to fade into the background.
At MK Dons he was obviously the best player in the team (and the division) – he was so far ahead of everyone that he couldn’t help but be sure of himself. This carried over into his first couple of seasons with us.
Since then he has realised (probably not consciously) that in this league he is no longer the effortless stand-out. He seems to be incapable of putting the necessary effort in to become a valuable part of the team, rather than a stand-out individual who can get away with producing the occasional bit of genius as a substitute for it.
Tbh, I’m not sure he’s bright enough to understand what he needs to do. I hope I’m wrong, he seems like a basically decent guy who hasn’t yet grown up.

Have a lot of friends who support Chelsea and there were about 10 players they’d rather have seen leave before Barkley – though they’d admit his career is in limbo a bit yeah

Frank Moanpard obviously didn’t like him and he has a fair few midfielders to choose from. Barkley has improved recently but his career had stalled, so good on him for wanting to play. I just didn’t think the Chelsea transfer was a good fit, although the money would have been hard to turn down, definitely more than what we would have offered.

Chelsea will miss Barkley – has really impressed me when coming on late in games, a bit surprised they loaned him.

I guess Ross wants starts in case he earns a last international team hurrah

Think I may be in the minority here but I hope he stays & does what most of the pundits, journalists & ex-players are advising, i.e., work hard, focus on football & get back to the form he showed in his first 3-ish seasons.
I’m no psychologist but my guess is José is trying a ‘reverse job,’ to get into his head, rattle him, fire him up & push him to regaining/achieving his full potential as undoubtedly he’s an immensely talented ‘street player’
Come on dele, please sort yourself out!

To be fair Eriksen lost the plot in his last season too. I think that was more to do with the peanuts Levy was paying him and the lack of ambition then shown by the club more than anything else though. Mind you he hasn’t set the Italian league on fire either. Perhaps some of these lads think too much? I know Dele was hit by the sacking of Poch quite badly.

Dele is a strange one. Hopefully the ambition the club is currently showing will wake him up. I still think he has a role to play off the bench, cameos to begin with but as the season progresses and the cup games come thick and fast, hopefully longer appearances until he gets his confidence back and Mou starts praising him again.
He’s a good sub to have around for now, that takes the pressure off him and hopefully will give him time to think where he’s at. Maybe seeing the lies of Kane and Bale running around will convince him that he’s at the top and needs to restart his career to join in. I haven’t given up on him yet, he’s got a confidence issue that can be repaired with time I hope. But we need a big squad for this season and he should be a part of it – make or break time though.

Totally agreed, we have been waiting 3 seasons for him to grow up. He has got too comfortable and although England binned him he didn’t see that as an issue. Was Poch too nice to him, I don’t know but he needed a kick up the backside a few seasons ago. Lots of players burst on to the scene, but the top players stay there. He is definitely good enough, but so is Dele’s mate Ross Barkley, who is trying to resurrect his career with Villa. Dele should follow suit. It might be the making of him.

That’s how I saw Deles’ future too, with the manager building the team around him, such was the impact he made. Wood for the trees springs to mind with the lad, he can move, earn huge money, and carry on in the same attitude, but will he realise what Mourinho has been trying to make him understand, time will tell.

I watched him closely when he came on in the second half on Thursday. What one would expect from a professional, mature player whose failings have been laid bare by his gaffer, is somebody who comes out and busts a gut to show the boss that he’s fighting for his place.
Yes he scored a goal, yes he put a few passes together, but what I saw was a lot of walking and jogging. No effort, no fight. A player who looked like he cant be arsed running. Gone is the Dele of old, and I think José is right to be fed up.
He needs a move.

If he’d lived up to his early potential we’d have built the team around him.

Even Poch abandoned that and started playing him out of position to get him into the starting 11. He just wasn’t consistent enough where Son and Eriksen were.

Think he might struggle whatever happens now – can’t see how any side will take the risk to build a team around his strengths.

Unless he goes back to MK Dons.

Think he’ll need a ‘lucky fit’ scenario
