Jose Mourinho is undoubtedly one of the most divisive managers to take charge of Tottenham Hotspur in modern times.
There was much optimism regarding the Portuguese tactician’s appointment in November 2019 given his achievements in the game with the likes of Chelsea, Porto, Inter and Real Madrid.
However, Mourinho lasted just 17 months and 86 games before being ousted with Spurs seventh in the Premier League but just days away from facing Manchester City in the EFL Cup final.
Whether it was calling Dele Alli ‘lazy’ or being revered by Harry Kane, no two Spurs players will ever give you the same opinion of Mourinho.
Danny Rose opens up on Jose Mourinho relationship
If there’s one player who could be forgiven for holding a grudge against Mourinho, it’s Danny Rose.
The England international was a nailed-on starter whenever fit before Mourinho arrived but quickly lost his place under the former Man Utd boss.
Rose played just five times under Mourinho and many speculated that the two had a poor relationship, especially given the argument witnessed between the two in the All or Nothing documentary about the club by Amazon.
But Rose has now set the record straight, insisting he didn’t really have a relationship with Mourinho at all and that his main gripe was being caught out by the cameras set up for the documentary.
“I only really worked under him for eight or 10 weeks so I didn’t really have a relationship with him. It was just a normal player/manager relationship, hello, good morning, how are you?” Rose said on the podcast of former teammate Kyle Walker (via TBR).
“He came in and he had this approach of wanting to build with three centre-backs and having the right back as the outlet. My game was that I enjoyed being offensive and his system was the left-sided player would be a centre-back and not go forward. So my days were numbered at the club when he wanted to adopt that approach.
“In 10 weeks it wasn’t like there was a huge falling out. That conversation you see on the documentary is a completely normal conversation and any player who is not playing on the Saturday, the first thing you do is knock on the door.
“When Poch was there, there was no cameras in his office. He didn’t allow that, so when I have gone to knock on the door, I was assuming there were no cameras in the office, but they had put one in. I didn’t know that. I didn’t get notified until May that they had got this and were putting it in, so I wasn’t happy.”
