Daniel Levy’s Till Receipt For 5 Years Of Systematic Neglect

By The Boy -

Spurs fans spewing baseless venom in Jose Mourinho’s direction ought* to benefit from this till receipt.

*I’m appreciative that some fans couldn’t be reached, even via a spiritualist, as is evidence by the routine groans that Andre Villas-Boas’ name still draws, despite his win percentage in all competitions being greater than Redknapp’s, Poch’s or even the mighty Sherwood’s.

At a glance, the football team was underfunded over the last 5 seasons, during which period, only Southampton spent less than us.

The failure to back Pochettino was frankly criminal, the Argentine delivered 2nd and 3rd places in the Premier League, and yet ENIC’s response to invest less. Poch was actually rewarded with having his purse strings tightened – talk about the floggings will continue until morale improves!

Pochettino was branded a miracle worker, a phrase that barely covers his work in N17. What grates here is that Poch wasn’t even perfect and yet on a diet of bread and water, he was comparatively successful.

Worse though, is that it must take some type of psychopath to plough on with demolishing White Hart Lane and building a loosely sports themed entertainment complex, despite the obvious positives happening on the pitch.

The cat calling of Jose Mourinho is woefully misplaced. Spurs look to have sunk to a level where it is difficult to believe that a single coach could resolve the situation.

Details of Tottenham’s shots on goal can be found in this piece from The Athletic (£).

People ripped Harry for being dishonest but I thought he was always straight up.. I dont blame any player or manager like rose or schnapps for being honest.. I would rather them than the likes of sol campbell. Or even Tintin sloping out of the club in what most people percieve as ‘professional’. Pretending hes happy for years and saying nothing. Oh I may stay that would be good but I may look for new challenge…. I would have respected the little snowflake far more if he told the truth rather than ‘deflecting’ the painfully obvious questions.

Let’s do some maths. Redknapp and Poch didn’t get the players they wanted + The pandemic has caused the club to take out a £170m loan + Levy hasn’t bought 5 top grade world class ready player in his entire tenure + We already had a large serviceable debt to cope with = I’m not making it up. Man Utd fans relentlessly moan they are being ripped off by the Glazers, yet since Red Nose left they have spent on transfer approximately £0.9bn. And they will continue to spend. I though have to look at the facts and the reality. Do you honestly believe Levy is going to give Jose £250m to spend in the Summer?

He won’t get his own players though. Levy will throw a collection of mid ranking undesirables at him for the next 18 months whilst moaning about losing revenue due to the pandemic. With Kane and Son we need a minimum of 5 new ready to go first team players. That is approximately £250m. We have at a rough estimate £14.28. You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear and we have a lot of pig skin flying around at the moment.

I get your point, but a manager has come in who I respect in terms of winning trophies, but his style of play (like George Graham, Gerry Francis) is something I have always been at odds with. Being the Tottenham manager is not enough, he has to show me a way of playing, synonymous with Spurs. I know our squad is ready for change, it was 3 years ago, but Arteta is pushing his philosophy on his players to see who is able to cope. I do not know what Mourinho’s style, philosophy, agenda, call it what you wish, is. If it’s to bore me to death, like last night I have to tolerate it, but not like it.

Yes, the blame for the quick fall in status of Spurs lies totally in the hands of Levy.
He has a great deal to answer for. We have the best training facilities and stadium
but like any sensible business you have to inject investment into the team.
This has to be top rated players not BOGOF as are the actions of Levy.
We have had great scouts whom have travelled the world to find super up and coming players only to be told by Levy I’m not spending any money.
There cannot be a more job dissatisfaction in any job to have just wasted your time.
No wonder one our best moved to RB Leipzig. They listened and bought his recommendations. Needless to say they gave Spurs a thrashing in football.
Clearly, we need urgent new investment into our club before it’s too late.
So, if that means Levy and Joe Lewis sell up now then it can’t come quick enough.

In terms of transfer net spend per season, how much do you think would be enough to compete long term at the top of the league? Until recently we have been running at close to zero and that’s obviously not going to cut it. City top the league at over £100m per season. What should be aimed for as a competitive level we would be happy with?

DannyG

I think Harry took his eye off the ball here. He should have been professional and deflected questions about the England job. Instead he made it painfully clear to whoever was listening where he’d rather be. In the last few months of the season we faded and let Arsenal finish ahead of us and dropped out of the Champions League – despite finishing 4th. it was a predicament entirely of Harry’s making. It was a shame but he had to go after that.

One of the most galling things is this nonsense spouted by Levyologists that we have to adopt a different way of acting in the transfer market to the clubs owned by oligarchs and Arab Sheiks and that we run a self sustaining model. Firstly, we could have invested in the squad had the money generated by the club been used wisely in the transfer market. I stress wisely, because you do not have to spend ludicrous amounts on new players, something Maureen is very capable of if given the chance, which will never happen at Spurs. Instead, that money was used by Enic to buy more property locally which would boost their asset value. This is tantamount to taking a dividend in cash, so to pretend that the owners never take anything out of the club is farcical. Secondly, there is Levy’s salary which is far too high and I won’t mention the least deserved bonus in history. This is a club which has lost it’s soul and identity. The managers know it, although there was a glimmer of hope under Poch, and the players know it. There is no pride in wearing the shirt and the fans know they will never win anything meaningful under Enic. Alas, I cannot see anything changing unless we are flirting with relegation with a half empty stadium. The only thing that Enic understand is money. One thing is for sure, there is nobody running or working at the club who understands football.

Dele has peaked and is regressing, he’s the only midfielder I know that can successfully tackle himself, Moura is crap 99 times out of 100, seriously inconsistent and an impact sub at best, and Lloris has made too many mistakes in recent seasons to be wanted by anybody, including in the wc final. He’s a shot stopper who can’t command aerial balls into his area and his kicking is awful.

I remember arguing what shady practises Levy and ENIC were up to many years ago, to be met by howls of derision from his many apologists. Well as Nigel Farage once said – you’re not laughing now are you?
These parasites are destroying our club bit by painful bit. It’s painful to watch. Won’t be long now before Kane is off if the lad has any sense. Walker got it right didn’t he? I think Levy actually suffers from some form of mental illness because he seems unable to spend money on decent players. He can’t resist what in his own simple little mind is a bargain player. The fact that nobody else is for him doesn’t seem to ring any alarm bells either. The fact that the said player is only slightly above average in a poor league doesn’t seem to resonate with him either. He thinks he’s got a bargain because the selling club give him a reduction, no doubt keen to get rid of the player. Levy is nothing ore than a low quality market trader and knows absolutely nothing about football. He’s also a control freak.
Many fans thought that when Poch performed miracles and we were flying high then Levy would change. I’ve heard this kind of garbage for years from a portion of forum mad Spurs fans with the IQ of tadpoles; “once we’re in the CL then the top players will want to come to us” or “once the new stadium is built we’ll be able to pay more for players and up their wages too”. Bullshit. Levy has shat all over you gullible idiots hasn’t he?
The other one was “Levy is brilliant because he stopped us from doing a Leeds”. LOL right now we could do with being like Leeds! TBH I’m giving up my financial support of Spurs and have even sold my shirt. I’m not spending another penny whilst these crooks are in charge. Please do the same, it’s the only way they’ll ever take any notice because boy are they obsessed with money.

Doesn’t excuse the lack of the squad investment when other winning teams have invested in theirs. Yes, the new place will generate significant revenue, but with so much debt, do you honestly think that the extra dosh will be used to invest in quality players or be used to service the debt and generate profit for Levy and Lewis which is their first priority? I hope I’m wrong, I really do, but nothing suggests that I will be.

By that logic Arteta wouldn’t have improved Arsenal and Ancellotti wouldn’t have improved Everton from their starting points. I wasn’t expecting a League win under Jose, or even top 4 (although a half decent outfit had 3rd and 4th place wrapped up) I’m not a mentalist, but I was expecting more than we’ve been served up. I would rather Spurs try to play like Guardiola and lose rather than play like Roy Hodgson and lose. ‘The great fallacy is that the game is first and last about winning. It is nothing of the kind. The game is about glory, it is about doing things in style and with a flourish, about going out and beating the lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom.’

This anti ENIC stance isn’t irrational disdain for the owners no matter who they are. This is based on a 20 year track record.

For the first 7-8 years of Levy & Co’s involvement at Spurs I used to be one of their biggest supporters. As time went on a pattern begun to emerge and the penny finally dropped, you could see what they were all about.

Each decent looking side dismantled as soon as it got close to doing something meaningful. Players bought purely to move on once they reached their prime. Unusually low spending on the squad both in terms of wages and transfer fees. The reluctance to sign proven quality and/or leaders on the pitch.

If the penny hasn’t yet dropped for you, I pity you and suggest you wipe the sh*t from your eyes…

Good form requires an optimistic, positive mentality flowing through a football club with genuine aspirations of glory.

We had that optimism under Poch’s coaching and the lie of ‘the project’, before Levy’s facade crumbled and reality set in.

This group of players are unlikely to sustain any decent form because they know ENIC don’t care.

Look at the picture at the top of the page where the net spend is. It’s well documented how we have one of the lowest spends in the Premier League and because of Levy’s guidance, we’ve bought many average players over time as its preferable to Levy to spend a little on average rather than a lot on quality. Look at what Man City, Chelsea, Man Utd, and more recently, Liverpool have done with their squads over the last 10 years. What’s it got them? We need quality players, not average players. We need players like Bruno Fernandez, rather than Gedson Fernandez. If we can break that cycle, we might get somewhere, but history doesn’t suggest that will happen.

The nature of form means that at the moment, we don’t rate our own players, but round the corner when we have a bit of form, some of the players that currently we’re slating turn out to be world beaters. No reason why players like Dele, Moura and Lloris can’t hold down a spot in a team competing for honours – on form they show their quality.

Mourinho’s job is to improve the team isn’t it? He’s had enough time to impose his style of play, you tell me what that is. I won’t hold my breath though. Ole at Utd has had time to get the players in, one of which your beloved Levy should have signed (Bruno), but he also got money. Mourinho has taken over a worse team than Ole did, but yet we have no money to get out of the mire. Klopp got time, along with money. Time isn’t going to fix this mess, a load of cash is, which we do not have. To simply shout ‘Get behind the team’ is nonsensical when you see what is actually happening. Imagine signing Messi and playing long ball. That’s what we’ve done in getting Mourinho. He needs hundreds of millions of pounds to improve us and we are going to throw free transfers and loans at the man. If you’re happy with the style of football he has OUR team playing after 29 games, no better than what Poch threw at us for 18 months, then you’ve been sold a wrong ‘un.

I’m not buying Covid as an excuse for no money for transfers, when Mourinho took over in was it November, he said he knew the funds were limited at Spurs and he was happy to work with the great squad he had. Net spend will not change.

We have a good squad. He’ll have us winning before too long. Sheff Utd was a low point but that result was down to our poor defending rather than anything else. We can bounce back.

While I’m not a critic of the new stadium, the pandemic couldn’t have hit us at a worse time. We should have been starting to see the rewards for the extra revenue it was bringing in. Instead we have to take on even more debt .

It’s worth noting that a number of clubs look like going to the wall in the near future. There could be a lot of players on dress looking for contracts. This could have a massive impact on the transfer market.

While the neglect in the squad is real, Mourinho’s job is to get the best out of the squad. So far he’s not doing it as well as he might.

I think this is in part due to the massive job he has to do to organise our defensive shape. It went to pot under Poch unfortunately and it will take a while to get back. Sheff Utd was a step back but there was evidence of progress in the previous 2 games. Let’s see what we get tonight.

I’m keen to see what he can do next season with less baggage and a chance to change some of the squad to his liking.

Look where Everton were when Silva got sacked. They were abysmal and looking amongst the favourites to be relegated. There has been an improvement, no matter how small, but I cannot see where we have improved. We’ll be lucky not to finish 13th if things carry on, never mind 10th. Ndombele doesn’t need asking nicely, he needs to pull his finger out, but once you go down that route of publically hanging players out to dry there is rarely any coming back. Calling out the lads v Sheffield Utd doesn’t need doing, but in the dressing room he should have thrown Aurier at them all. It didn’t work at Man Utd for him and as we have won one game (v a woeful West Ham team) in 9 or 10 games, that doesn’t show me the players are respecting Mourinho’s ways and if they are, they haven’t learned a thing off him. If you can tell me one thing that Mourinho has done to show you there is ‘hope’ to be had, please let me know because I keep looking at the next game thinking ‘it has to be better’ but then I look back and see what has come before. It is similar to thinking Soldado will come good!

Mourinho can talk about characters and motivation, but his job is too improve the team. I don’t think he has done it one bit, especially in defence, which is his apparent speciality! Ancellotti has improved a woeful Everton team. I’m not saying they are world beaters, but they have got better. Everton fans are happy with what they have seen, especially defensively. Lots of talk today that Origi was the only starter from Klopp’s first game in charge for Liverpool. There isn’t a rational Spurs fan out there who doesn’t know we will be a totally different outfit in 5 years, but who won’t be? Man City have got rid of 18 First team players in the last 5 years and that’s not counting the departing Silva and Otamendi/Stones who could well leave for different reasons. Football is about evolution, we will need time, but why put this task on a manager who has no track record in it? When Klopp took over he didn’t go about his overhaul by slagging off the players publically, feeling sorry for himself and playing a boring brand of football.

Jose is meant to be a great coach yet basic tactical and fundamental errors happen every week, some which even poch didn’t let slide. Jose was out and out the wrong guy, picking someone based on their history makes me think of the rednapp era where we all knew his version of FIFA was a few years out of date. Jose has his moment in the sun, but he is not the right guy. This statement in no way is meant to suggest that levy is not the root of all evil, no manager could turn this lot into world beaters, but man for man we should be better than teams like Sheffield United.
