Daniel Levy eyeing surprise move for Premier League manager if Conte leaves in the summer – opinion

By Mehdi Gokal -

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering replacing wantaway Antonio Conte with Thomas Frank as they plan to rebuild the team from scratch.

Fichajes, a Spanish news outlet has claimed that the North London club are interested in hiring the Brentford manager if Antonio Conte leaves the club at the end of the season.

The club’s hierarchy, according to the report, is already looking for replacements for Antonio Conte, whose future at the club is uncertain amid reports of a return to Juventus.

The former Chelsea manager has done a great job at Spurs since taking over last season. He guided them to a top 4 finish, beating London rivals Arsenal to it on the last day of the season.

They have also started strong this season, despite their pragmatic style of play. Being third in the Premier League, ahead of Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool, is no easy feat, and they still have a good chance of advancing to the Round of 16 of the Champions League ahead of their game against Marseille on Tuesday.

His recent success with Tottenham has not gone unnoticed, as the club’s hierarchy is eager to offer the Italian manager a new contract, with reports claiming that the club is ‘working‘ on a new deal for him.

But Spurs have reportedly started looking for alternatives for the former Premier League winner in case he does leave at season’s end. Amongst the names linked with the club is Brentford boss Thomas Frank.

The Dane was an assistant coach for Dean Smith before being promoted to the head coach job and they have consistently progressed under him. They finished mid-table in the Championship in his first season, advanced to the playoffs the following year, and were promoted to the Premier League in 2021 through the Championship playoffs.

They play some excellent attacking football under him and his progress with Brentford has gained him plaudits for his tactical acumen and for overperforming under a limited budget – a quality that would certainly tempt Daniel Levy.

While Thomas Frank has not yet proven his ability to manage a top-tier club with world-class players, that is no reason to assume that he will not be able to build a project at Spurs. After all, Pochettino did not have much experience either when he joined Spurs from Southampton, and look how great that decision turned out to be.

If you are an up and coming young manager who’s in the early stages of his career, why would you come to Spurs where you can only end up being burnt to death on the funeral pyre is that has been built by Levy’s ineptitude? You only have to see how difficult it was to find the right managerial appointment after Levy sacked Mourinho, one week before a Cup final, as NES’s appointment took around 70 days to conclude. The list of attempted appointees included the likes of Nagelsmann, Hansi Flick, Fonseca, Gattuso, Ten Hag and Potter with Paratici persuading Levy to appoint NES. Well done Fabio, by the way for that.
So the moral to my rant is that if you want to enhance your reputation as a young coach/manager, don’t come to Spurs, but if your reputation and ability as a manager is on the wane, and I’m not suggesting that is the case with Conte, take the Levy shilling, safe in the knowledge that you will be amply rewarded for failure to win silverware as everybody worth his salt knows that particular task, whilst Levy is in charge, is nigh on impossible.

All jobs have different criteria, winning trophies has never been a criteria at Spurs. Levy has sacked 15 managers, why? Generally it’s when the manager gets to the point where they can do no more with the resources given to them.

Nobody can claim that Conte isn’t good enough, anybody claiming that any problems are down to him are retarded…

What is? That Conte will leave or that Frank is a possible replacement?

Why the discussion? Conte’s contract expires at the end of the season and his family still live in Turin, hence discussion…

I quite like Thomas Frank. However, if Conte goes it just proves how lacking in ambition Levy and ENIC continue to be. You bring in four or five quality players that fit his system and Conte starts winning stuff.

However, this will never happen, and the regime that has won only a solitary League Cup in 23 years will hit the reset button and appoint manager number 16 to keep ‘Operation Bullsh*t’ afloat. Meanwhile the happy clappers will say Conte’s already been backed and that he’s a ‘chequebook manger’. Grow up…

As far as I am aware , we currently have a Manager ?
Why the discussion ? And how many applicants would there be if Conte left ?
People can mock but Spurs are in a very healthy position , our future is rosy [ with occasional rain] and we look forward to an exciting decade at The Lane . C O Y S !!

Agreed. Any mug still wanting to work for Levy when Conte checks out is clearly either there for the cash or as a stepping stone to a club with ambition.
