Crouch urges Spurs to keep inconsistent star if it is financially viable

By Bruce Grove -

Former Spurs striker, Peter Crouch has urged Tottenham to keep Gareth Bale beyond this campaign if they can.

The Welshman joined Tottenham on loan from Real Madrid in the summer as they looked to become a top-four side again.

He has taken time to return to form but has been in top shape since the turn of the year.

He was a player that Jose Mourinho relied on in recent matches prior to the Dinamo Zagreb debacle and his future remains uncertain.

He is one of the highest earners at the club, with Spurs paying around half of his £600k-a-week salary.

With that much pay, he needs to deliver for the club in every game and Crouch says he can reach that level.

The ex-footballer turned pundit admits that he took time to get into top shape, but he said the attacker has now proven to be a class act and a player that can get back to his best form, so Spurs should keep him if it makes sense financially.

Crouch said via Sun Sports: “There’s a lot to discuss with Gareth Bale and whether he should stay at Spurs this summer.

“It’s going to cost Tottenham a lot of money to keep him. However, he’s coming into some good form at the moment and proving what a good player he is.

“He was so excited to come back to Spurs in the summer and regularly play football. The first few months didn’t really work out for him, but he’s found his feet now.

“It depends on whether it’s going to work financially for Tottenham, but on his day Gareth Bale is as good as anyone in the Premier League.

“He can definitely get back to that level, he needs the love of the supporters.”
