“Confidence is a massive thing in football” Bale attempts to explain away his Tottenham struggles

By Bruce Grove -

Gareth Bale has attempted to explain his struggles at Tottenham after he arrived on loan in the summer by claiming confidence is a huge part of his game.

The Welshman returned to Spurs at the start of this season with the Lilywhites hoping that he would fire them into the Premier League’s top four.

He came injured and was given time to get back to a good fitness level.

However, when Jose Mourinho fielded him in the first half of the campaign, he struggled with fans yearning for the Bale that tore apart Premier League defences during his first stint at the club.

The new year has seen him return to some form and he has helped Tottenham close in on the Champions League places.

Speaking while on international duty, the attacker spoke about how important confidence is to his game.

He says because he has to dribble and take risks, he has to feel very good about his body when he is on the pitch.

He explained via Sun Sports: “Confidence is a massive thing in football.

“Whether you are the best player or the worst, having confidence as a footballer — especially for me — is one of the most important things.

“Playing in the final third you need to take risks. You really need to feel good about yourself and to be able to beat a defender, shoot and score goals.

“I’m building my confidence up slowly which has been good — and that has shown in my performances and with scoring goals.

“I need to keep improving, keep putting in good performances. And then hopefully they can keep on getting better and better to lead into the Euros.”

Bale’s been coddled and indulged for several months, slooowly making his way back to something approaching match fitness. He pulled his IG shenanigans (“Good session today” when he was actually working with the medical team) and ruled himself out of games on the basis of no discernible injuries. Also, he was paid a million pounds a month by Spurs for that.

I struggle to see how Mourinho is the bad guy here, but hey, that’s the life of your average cultist.

It seems like that is a cleverly worded response to the way the manager Mourinho has treated him, despite all the carp thrown at him, he still shows the dignity of a decent human being in his response.

Good luck to the lad milking the monies but IMO his loan financial package is obscene?!!

The way to gain confidence is to play. Gareth knows Real Madrid don’t want to play him.

He could leave to play but he has chosen to see out his contract which is his prerogative and he wants to do the best for himself and his family financially. That tells me that football is not his top priority.

Regarding quelling transfer rumours all Kane has to do is to publicly commit his future to Spurs for the rest of his career.
The fact that he has not done so leaving his options open silence speaks volumes!!

Sorry to disappoint but leaving aside occasional flashes of brilliance reminding us of past glories the real Gareth Bale skinning defenders in his wake and scoring goals for fun was 7 years ago not now!! Taking a risk IMO this expensive loan deal has currently not worked out. Bale exits at the end of the season. We move on!
