“But you have to find that balance” Pundit says Conte must fix this problem at Tottenham

By Bruce Grove -

Spurs have been performing dismally in attack this campaign and their lack of goals could cost them a European place at the end of this season.

The Lilywhites had no shots on target in their last domestic game against Everton, which was Antonio Conte’s first league match in charge.

Keeping a clean sheet meant the team did just fine in defence, but that isn’t enough, and goals need to flow at the Tottenham Stadium if the Lilywhites are serious about achieving success this season.

Former Leeds United man, Noel Whelan, admits that Conte would want to make Spurs hard to score against, but insists his team needs to become more productive in attack as well.

“He’ll be building them up gradually – starting at the back. Conte prides himself on keeping clean sheets and making his teams hard to beat,” he told Football Insider.

“But you have to find that balance. They’ve got some world-class attacking options at Tottenham.

“Getting a draw is not a bad way to start your tenure as a manager, but he will have to work really hard to find that formula in order to have that flow from defence into attack.

“You can’t have no shots on target in a game when you have Kane, Son, Lucas Moura, and all these attacking players on the pitch. It’s unforgivable.

“They’ve got to start making things click, U-turn on the playing style and figure out how to hurt teams.”

The Boy Hotspur Says

A clear lack of creativity from midfield has been the problem for Spurs for much of this campaign.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min remain two of the best attackers in the Premier League, but they have been starved of the right supply so far.

Nuno Espirito Santo struggled to get the best from the likes of Dele Alli, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele.

If Conte wants to succeed where his predecessor failed, the Italian would need to get this team producing more creatively either through the midfield or from his wing-backs.

Indeed. We need another striker and upgrades.. World class is a loose term now isn’t it.. Lol… Reggy cracks me up because he’s brilliant going forward, looks like he’s going to score often, but he never does the lad can’t hit a barn door… If any player can’t strike the ball hard and properly then they just need to pass the ball into the net. Pass it with a bit of pace where the keeper isn’t standing. Simple… Not having a shot on target in 90 mins is embarrassing at any level.

All these attacking players, all these wingers, problem is Moura, Bergwign, Gil, don’t score regularly, midfielders Lo Celso, Tanguy, Skipp and Hojbjerg are unlikely to score double figures.

Add in a defence that rarely scores and we have problems, never mind Son and Kane being below par.
