“But what has happened to him?” Pundit says this midfielder is on his last Tottenham chance

By Bruce Grove -

Sky Sports pundit Michael Bridge believes Harry Winks will probably not get another chance to succeed at Tottenham if it doesn’t happen under Antonio Conte.

The midfielder has fallen down the pecking order at Spurs and he is now behind Oliver Skipp.

However, he was one of Spurs’ most trusted players under the management of Mauricio Pochettino and he even started the Champions League final against Liverpool in 2019.

The arrival of Antonio Conte means he has yet another manager to impress in his attempts to win a place back in the team.

Bridge wonders what has happened to the midfielder and insists this is certainly his last chance.

He told GiveMeSport: “In terms of players who are potentially on the way out, Harry Winks, I’ll mention him again, I know majority of Tottenham fans don’t like him and with justification, but this was a guy that was man of the match against Real Madrid, a regular in that Champions League run, but what has happened to him? This is his final roll of the dice at Spurs.”

Winks’ fall from the Tottenham starting XI to a squad player has been surprising, but it also shows how fast football moves on from anyone.

The midfielder has watched the club sign the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and also brought back Skipp from his loan spell away last season.

The two of them continue to impress and are making it hard for any manager to look beyond them.

Winks will get his chance to impress Conte every day in training and when it comes in a match, he has to take it regardless of the opponent or competition. It is all on him now.

If he only had 25-33 games a season in him for those 4 or 5 years then he should have been in all the finals and crunch games against the toughest teams . Which he rarely was. I think Botchy could have won that league cup in his first season if he started the moose.. Bentaleb and Mason were pants. Both had moved on a couple years later to lower clubs. Then Winks was often preferred to him.

It baffles me that the likes of Bentaleb, Mason and Winks were preferred over Moussa Dembele in the vast majority of big games… Now that was a Real Madrid team in serious decline who had just been beaten 1 nil by Girona.. And Dele was the man of the match with his two goals.. We got lucky with our 33percent posession and 10 shots on goal. Madrid had 20 shots on our goal… We all hoped Winks would evolve in to the English Pirlo or Iniesta, but sadly it hasn’t happened.. He’s a Ryan Mason/ Tom Carroll hybrid.

He was very good in the system he came into. He could not pass 10 yards in front, but it did not matter. Dembele Victor and Erikssen were 5 feet away. I said before, and this not an excuse, the academy miss that Winks was running around playing back and sideways, never been challenged to show more and like a curse he was perfect for Poch dink and dunk let the wingback loose system. For a minute he passes to Sissoko and he got exposed when Dier could not make a pass, Erikssen left and that is all she wrote with a few injuries to tote. I think he has time to do well at another club who wants a guy to sit in midfield like Neves at Wolves.

How good was Winks at his best? People look back as if he had this dominant mythical period of form – can’t remember it

£40 million Tinksy Winksy Tiger..dressing room spy more like overpriced and overpaid . Why the club cannot accept that both Winks and Dele both looked good in the best Spurs team in 33 years is beyond me .They must have their uses….
