Bid Is Rejected But Spurs Appear To Be Holding All The Aces

By The Boy -

Dele Alli’s future at Spurs is far from guaranteed, since the arrival of José Mourinho the player has seen his management go from the light joshing of ‘are you Dele Alli. or Dele Alli’s brother?’ to being told he was lazy in front of his peers, to a final one-to-one talk where the Portuguese resorted to playing the role of a father figure, urging the 24-year-old to understand how fast time goes by. “I am 56. And yesterday, I was 20”. This process took many weeks, and with no signs of improvement, Mourinho began substituting and not selecting the boy.

Matt Law for The Telegraph believes that a move to PSG is still possible, as two unsatisfactory offers have come in from the Paris side, and the last to be rejected was thought to be worth £4million. At £100,000 a week, Alli is not cheap to home for most sides, and the sticking points are themselves an indicator that Tottenham are not seeking to merely offload the player at any cost, as perhaps was the case with Gareth Bale’s sudden arrival from Spain.

For now, Tottenham hold all the aces, because Dele is not being chased out of the club, and if he were to move, it would be pretty likely that he’d use a loan to show the world what he can do.

I take a view that the boy has endless chances and his true value to Spurs lies within the wages budget he currently occupies. Dele is playing for a London side with a billion pound stadium, world class training facilities and one of the planet’s most prolific coaches. What more is he waiting for before he becomes motivated to consistently raise his game?

Dele under Poch never had to worry about someone else taking his place because thanks to the chairman there was no one else.
He let his levels drop, showed more interest in off field activities and has now lost his club and International places. His talent is still there but is his desire and work ethic?

Good player to bring off the bench or cover in the case of injuries. Scored some useful goals last season, not currently a starter, perhaps coming on as sub fairly regularly will take the pressure off him a bit. See how it goes.

I also watched with interest and agree that whilst he showed some bits of skill,he was somewhat peripheral at times and was indeed sloppy in possession.
It’d hard to tell whether he is taking in what Jose told him.Mourinho is not the one to take liberties with and the next three months, assuming he stays, will be crucial to his continued career. It’s all in his hands.
At the moment he is a long way of being an automatic starter and we don’t miss him.

Watched Dele with interest in the Maccabi Haifa game to see if he is improving. Without doubt there were some nice pieces of skill and quality but equally there was some really sloppy stuff and this against a side that wasn’t all that. His first contribution in the game was to play a loose pass and turn the ball over and one of his last was the cheeky nutmeg that won a penalty. So it was a bit of a curate’s egg type of performance. Off the ball he needs to do better (watch Lo Celso) as he has the tendency to be a passenger and be largely ineffective. Based on this performance, I hope he doesn’t get splinters from sitting on the bench (if he makes it).

Personally I see Dele as someone who could go either way. We all know the way he was headed. As pointed out, the chances are now running out and it’s down to him to produce the goods on a regular basis. I think he can do it, but if the team is successful I don’t really care if he doesn’t.

What is particularly refreshing about this situation is that we don’t need him. We now have other players who are more effective than him, so we’re not clinging onto the hope he will turn his form around. By making good signings, the club is now proving to be bigger than the players. This is a remarkable turnaround from the start of last season.
