” A pretty poor Tottenham defence” Former journeyman forward reckons Spurs will struggle against Newcastle

By Bruce Grove -

Frank McAvennie has tipped Tottenham’s defence to struggle against Newcastle United if they line up with Callum Wilson leading their attack.

The striker has missed their last four matches through injury, but he looks set to be back for the game against the Lilywhites.

The England international has scored two league goals for them this season and he is arguably their best striker at the moment.

His return to the pitch will be a major boost for the Geordies who have also sold out their stadium for the game.

It is their first match since Mike Ashley sold the club to a consortium representing the Saudi Arabian government.

The Magpies will be looking to earn all three points from the match and former West Ham man, McAvennie believes the presence of Wilson will cause all kinds of problems for Tottenham defence, which he sees as “poor”

“If he’s back, that’s massive, that’s the game Wilson wants to play in,” McAvennie told Football Insider.

“He is going to be up against a pretty poor Tottenham defence and he is a striker who will punish you if you slip up.

“Me, as a striker, I would play against that defence all day long and twice on Sunday.

“It doesn’t matter, if you come up against a striker who knows how to pull you about and create space, you’re in trouble.

“If Newcastle are on it, which they should be, any ball over the top will have Eric Dier scrambling.

“Wilson will fancy that I’m sure. He loves scoring and he has a great chance to get a couple in my opinion.”

Pundits can be irritating, however, when you get a pundit that has a stellar playing career at the highest level then their opinions do carry some weight, even if one disagrees with them.

McAvennie is definitely not one of them, he is a former Hammer who despises Tottenham and truth be told, the view of a journeyman footballer that lead a very colourful off-field life is not high on my list of must-reads.

That said, he has an opinion and for some, he may have a valid point and they may welcome his opinion, so here it is.

They get back around 48 hours before. I thought this was fine but maybe covid isolation rules will stop them if they are in a red flag country.

I can’t believe they won’t get better than that but here’s hoping they do!

Is Romero back? I read somewhere that the South Americans may miss the first game after the internationals.

Yeah I’m sure he’s done his homework and knows Romero’s game inside out….

Word is Steve Bruce will not be manager on Sunday, fat Frank being talked up on 5Live.

Would think Newkie can do better than that.

You got evidence for this, Sonificent? Otherwise you might want to think about deleting this comment.

Furthermore, Bruce, according to that link you’ve provided, McAvennie was cleared in court of drug charges, but perhaps you know better.

Romero starts and puts Callum Wilson in his pocket.. The real danger against the barcodes is Saint Maxim (Hitchen should have snapped up this guy)… Reggy will have his work cut out there handling him.. They are weak at the back so we should bag 2 or 3 goals.. 4231.. Lloris, Reggy, Dier/Rodon, Romero, Emerson.. Hojberg, Skipp.. Son, Lo Celso, Lucas.. Kane…… If Kane has no fire again then haul him off at half time and bring young Dane Scarlett on.. Lets go.. COYS

Did you ever see him in the 80s Bruce? Wouldn’t call him a journeyman.
