In the final hours of the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur made a surprising move to land Emerson Royal from FC Barcelona for £25.8-million as the north London-based club revamped its backline this summer.
Emerson is with the Brazil national team this FIFA international window competing in the World Cup Qualifiers. The 22-year-old interviewed with Globo Esporte, discussing various topics, one of them being his move from La Liga to the Premier League.
The right-back commented on the difference going of playing style as he transitions from Spain to England. Emerson stated how the league is more competitive, and a team at the bottom of the table has more chance to defeat a club at the top of the standings.
“Premier is the best in the world today, it’s very competitive, you play with last place, and you can lose a game from 2 to 0, the difficulty is very high. So it’s a lot of transition and strength,” Emerson said.
“A little different from La Liga. Here it’s physical strength, a lot of speed, but it adapts; it’s normal. I come from three years of a totally different league. But I don’t see that this is a problem. In the shortest possible time, I will adapt.”
Furthermore, Emerson also touched on what he needs to work on as he transitions to playing in the Premier League. The Brazil international discussed needing to work on his strength as he adapts to the new style of play.
“At La Liga, I used to do more work with the ball, thinking about the short game, about playing. Here I’ve already changed the focus a little; I have to put more emphasis on strength,” Emerson said.
“The competition asks you to. I’ve already started to work in this direction; I’ve gained a little more body, a few more pounds that I didn’t think about gaining. For my evolution, this will be fundamental.”
