“A disaster zone” pundit rips into partnership Mourinho has high hopes for

By Bruce Grove -

Jose Mourinho has made the centre half partnership of Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier, his preferred choice since the restart.

That partnership has helped the club keep one clean sheet in three games since then, but former Chelsea star turned pundit Tony Cascarino has slammed the partnership and he even labelled it “a disaster zone”.

Spurs have suffered with poor form for a long time now and their defence is one position that has been causing them problems.

The Lilywhites have conceded 44 league goals this season, the joint-highest in the Premier League’s top nine, and it is easy to see why they have been struggling to get higher up the league table.

Cascarino is of the view that both defenders in the new centre-half partnership have their issues that make them not good enough to help the team defend.

He told The Times as quoted by Standard Sports:

“If I was coaching a side about to face Tottenham, I would immediately pounce on the full backs as an area of weakness and this is exactly what Wilder did.

“It gets worse. The centre-half partnership is a disaster zone. When Mourinho, as Manchester United manager, prepared to face Ajax in the final of the Europa League in 2017, he identified Davinson Sánchez as a weak link and yet he is now placing faith in that very same player.”

Mourinho has had to use the defenders that he inherited at the club as he prepares to overhaul his team in the summer.

The former Chelsea boss has high hopes for the Sanchez-Dier partnership, but it doesn’t seem to be working now and it remains unclear if he would change it in the next game against Everton on Monday evening.

Sanchez is another example of where the more money we spend on a player the lower his ability. He’s no more reliable than Aurier. Our defence is an absolute shambles. The only quick players we have are hopeless.

I thought when the loan was agreed,Levy specifically stated it would not be used for player recruitment.
I understand Jan is leaving, but why Toby is not starting is bizarre. His experience is invaluable and Sanchez is inconsistent and not spacialy aware.Dier is not playing badly, but if we have pretensions of grandeur then they are not a great first choice partnership.

The partnership deserves time, wrong to be judging it after three games and no decent defensive midfielders, and two puddings as fullbacks. Delighted to hear that Mourinho is “preparing to overhaul his team in the summer”. Just hope he tells Daniel Levy about it.

I’m a stay in Europe kinda of guy but can’t see us finishing 6th…I believe Levy would’ve budgeted for this so not to even get any European football will really kill the spending…catch 22…..maybe that’s why he got the 175m loan, for player cash purchases to get us out of this as deals would be cheaper (you’d assume)…just a thought., ….

It’s always ‘look at the fire!” whilst the shifty schoolboy skulks in the background with his box of matches, discarding fagbutts.
