Tottenham right wing-back Pedro Porro has broken his silence on Antonio Conte’s recent outburst against his own players.
Following the 3-3 draw with Southampton, the Italian manager launched a scathing attack on his squad, accusing them of being “selfish” and questioning their commitment to the club.
He also aimed jibes at the owners suggesting that they have been owners of the club for a long time without having won anything.
This has caused a stir amongst the Tottenham players and owners.
While the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Kulusevski have publicly backed the manager, Porro has taken a more neutral stance, saying that he was not aware of Conte’s comments until after the fact.
When asked about Conte’s comments during an interview with The Guardian, Porro simply stated that it was Conte’s opinion and did not delve any further into the matter.
“Well, that’s his thing … The first thing is, what you’re talking about: I hadn’t heard it until now.”
“In short, it was quite something … Well, that’s his opinion, I’m not getting involved there. That’s not one for me.”
Despite the uncertainty around the manager’s future, Porro remained resolute about his own long-term plans.
He stated that he wants to play for Spurs and is focused on being a success for his team.
When asked whether he regrets his move to Spurs given the uncertainty around the club, he said:
“No, I don’t think: ‘Where have I ended up?! What have I let myself in for?’ Not at all. [My long-term plan is] to play at Spurs, of course.”
“I’m clear that what I want is to be a success for my team: that’s all I’m thinking about. We’re out of the cups and the last league game escaped us but I’m confident in myself and the team. We can sort it out, of course. Absolutely. And I feel better all the time.”
The fallout from Conte’s outburst has led to rumors that he may be sacked during the international break, with Ryan Mason reportedly set to take over as interim manager until the end of the season.
Tottenham are already said to be considering a number of different candidates, including former manager Mauricio Pochettino and current PSG boss Thomas Tuchel in view to appoint them in the summer.
