Emerson Royal is the latest in a long list of right-backs who have played for Tottenham and he seems to have won over many of its fans.
The Brazilian joined the Lilywhites from Barcelona just before the last transfer window closed.
He is now the first choice and his arrival saw Spurs terminate the contract of the error-prone Serge Aurier.
Matt Doherty had been signed a year before his arrival, but the Republic of Ireland international has struggled to win over fans and managers at Tottenham.
Emerson is different and the Brazilian’s image was posted on the Spurs Twitter account with a caption that was simply a crown to depict his name – Royal.
Spurs fans filled the comments with praise for a player they seem to enjoy watching.
At least one fan thinks he is better than the likes of Kyle Walker and Trent Alexander-Arnold because he is the best in the league.
Others believe he is better than Takehiro Tomiyasu, whom Spurs initially wanted to sign before he moved to Arsenal. Here are some of the best reactions:
Best rwb in the league

“He is now the first choice and his arrival saw Spurs terminate the contract of the error-prone Serge Aurier.”
Almost poetic irony from the error-prone Bruce Grove.
Spurs did not terminate his contract, the contract was terminated mutually, which means he was not “sacked” as you are trying to imply.
The contract being mutually terminated can mean a variety of things; my suspicion is that he wanted to go and that it was agreed he could leave if a suitable transfer could not be negotiated – I mean Levy letting him go for free?
It was an open secret he wanted to leave and had he stayed/wanted to stay, he’d have still been considered for the spot in competition with Royal.
You really need to move on from your pathological dislike for Serge Aurier; he wore the shirt with pride, his attitude and commitment was never less than 100% even when surrounded by players cruising through at 75%.
He’s better than Doherty and Aurier, and maybe Tanganga, so thats a start.
Ah ‘Juncture’. A word I must remember to use more in conversation.
The boy has alot of potential and hopefully in the right hands to improve his game. Final delivery is key if he is to progress as a wing back. Still early days.
Ah Tim Vickery, the ‘expert’ who claimed Paulinho was the Brazilian Frank Lampard. Lol. I bet he got it from wiki.
Journo’s are ten a penny these days, qualified, knowledgeable football hacks are harder to find, but Vickery is one to his credit , and a Spurs fan by all accounts.
If somebody needs to go to social media for their opinions of footballers, they have some real issues.
He shows promise in a totally new environment, but the PL’s best RB he isn’t.He needs to polish up on his final ball and decision making.
Spot on.
FYI, this information did not come from Wikipedia but was imparted by Tim Vickery, an acknowledged and well respected expert on South American football, brother.
To say some Spurs fans are getting ‘carried away’ would be an understatement! Don’t get me wrong, I like the boy and think he has potential, he is certainly athletic and aggressive, with a decent amount of skill, but better than Trent Alexander-Arnold, Cancelo and Kyle Walker??? Certainly not at this juncture. However, if he can replicate TAA’s worldie of a free kick against the Spammers, then I’ll take my hat off to him!
Lol.. Reading a couple lines from wikipedia isn’t proper research brother..
He can defend. Has fight in him. Bags of confidence. Have high hopes for the lad… But no way is he better than Alexander Trent, Joao Cancelo, and Bonzo.
For those fans and journos who don’t do their research properly, he was called Royal by his uncle and was named after a Brazilian jelly dessert.
