“Unless he changes…” – Pundit urges club against appointing 52-year-old manager with excellent record

Former striker turned pundit Tony Cascarino has expressed his doubts about Tottenham’s potential appointment of Luis Enrique as their new manager.

Antonio Conte was sacked on Sunday following his outburst at the club and the players post Southampton draw where he accused his players of being selfish and the club owners for lacking ambition.

He was expected to leave the club at the end of the season regardless but his rant saw his time at Spurs come to an abrupt end.

Cristian Stellini is now the acting manager with Ryan Mason his assistant for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, Tottenham continues its search for a permanent replacement for Conte, with the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Julian Nagelsmann, and Luis Enrique being the most commonly linked names.

According to reports the former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique is top priority for Fabio Paratici who is a big admirer of him. Italian journalist Tony Damascelli also claimed last week that the club has made contact with the Spaniard.

However, Cascarino is not a big fan of his football. Speaking on The Game Football Podcast, he said

“They have to be really brave on the appointment they make and think outside of the box. When you hear Luis Enrique I was like ‘did you watch Spain play?’ We had to suffer Spain during the World Cup together. Unless he changes the way he wants to play football. They thought one million passes were a goal. For an ex-Barcelona player he didn’t resemble anything Barcelona did,”

While Enrique’s possession-based football may not be to everyone’s taste, it has proved successful for him in the past.

He won the “World’s Best Coach” award in 2014/15 with Barcelona and has won nine trophies with the club, including the Champions League. He has also been praised by other top managers, such as Pep Guardiola, who described him as one of the “best managers” in the past.
