Tottenham’s Defensive Weak Link Tipped For Summer Exit

By Ron Carne -

Tottenham and Jan Vertonghen are reportedly set to part ways this summer when his current contract expires.

The 32-year-old joined Spurs in 2012 and has since gone on to make 311 appearances for the club.

However, it remains to be seen how many more games are added to his tally, with reports suggesting that he could be on his way out ahead of next season.

As reported by The Sun, via Football Insider, while Tottenham offered the Belgian stalwart a one-year deal with less wages, Vertonghen was holding out for a two-year agreement.

With the two parties unable to find a compromise, it’s suggested that the former Ajax defender will move on this summer and so Jose Mourinho will potentially need to fill the void that he will leave behind if an exit does indeed materialise.

Spurs have conceded 40 goals in their 29 league games so far this season, giving them the joint-worst defensive record of the top 10 sides in the standings.

With that in mind, it would appear as though Mourinho needs defensive reinforcements regardless of whether or not Vertonghen agrees on a last-minute deal or does move on to shore things up at the back.

There was always two players, that when they were playing made me feel like we ‘Had a chance’. One was Dembele, and the other Vertonghan. One has left, and unfortunately Jan has regressed lately. It’s just a natural progression I feel, a replacement will be needed soon..
