Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon had several chances to leave the club during the summer transfer window.
However, his departure was reportedly complicated by the club’s firm stance on the terms.
According to reliable journalist Ben Jacobs, Spurs were focused on finding a permanent solution for Reguilon, making negotiations more difficult than expected.
Though Reguilon attracted interest from various European clubs, Tottenham were reportedly adamant about securing a deal with at least an obligation to buy, rather than agreeing to another loan deal.
This approach created challenges in resolving the Spaniard’s situation, despite his exclusion from Ange Postecoglou’s plans for the current season.
Speaking to GiveMeSport, Ben Jacobs stated:
“I think the Reguilon situation is very interesting at Tottenham, because he had options during the course of the European window, but Tottenham were quite tough on terms.
“And it made it very difficult to resolve the Reguilon situation, which has been throughout the window, frayed more around a loan than a permanent deal, albeit a loan with an option, potentially, or from Spurs’ point of view, an obligation, if they can get it.”
The 27-year-old left-back, who initially arrived at Tottenham from Real Madrid, spent the 2022/23 season on loan with Atletico Madrid and later joined Manchester United for a six-month stint last season.
His move to Old Trafford provided cover for the injured Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, and there were rumours that the Red Devils were interested in making the transfer permanent earlier this summer.
Reguilon also had a productive loan spell at Brentford during the second half of the recent season, where he impressed with four assists in 16 appearances, showcasing glimpses of his quality but the club opted against signing him on a permanent deal as well.
Tottenham continue to try and offload him with Fenerbahce said to be keen on signing him.
Whether they can agree the deal before the Turkish transfer window closes remains to be seen.
