Spurs Rapidly Heading Towards Double Blow claims BBC pundit

By Bruce Grove -

Football pundit, Noel Whelan claims that Tottenham is under pressure to make the top four this season.

He claimed that the club is suffering financial problems at the moment and they would be playing their remaining nine league games under serious pressure because if they fail to make the Champions League at the end of this season, it could be more problems for them.

He also claimed that finishing in the Champions League places would also play an important role in their summer transfer business.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think transfers dictate on whether they’re in the Champions League as well. They’ve got to take that into consideration as well – if they’re not in the Champions League, they won’t be getting that money they need and command.

“Players, top-class players, won’t want to sign for Tottenham because they won’t be playing in the Champions League. They’ve had a double hit here – there’s a lot of pressure on them for the last nine games.

“The way things have turned around so quickly into a negative for Tottenham on the financial front is a huge blow and it might be a double one if they don’t reach that Champions League spot.”

The Lilywhites are currently 8th on the league table ahead of the restart of the Premier League season.

They will face Manchester United in their first game back and Mourinho will be hoping that his team can make a good start to the end of their campaign now that they have a fully fit squad to play with.

Spurs reached the Champions League final last season, but they are struggling to finish this season inside the top four.

The Lilywhites have nine more games to go before the end of the season, and they will be looking to turn the season around when football returns so that they can make Europe’s elite competition.

What’s that got to do with the point I was making?

The main problem is that after Jose’s initial ‘new manager bounce’ we have gone from bad to worse. At one stage up to 5th within a point of top 4 after about 4 games, then the wheels fell off again and we dropped to 9th. Unless something miraculous happens there is no way we are getting into the top 4.

To drop from 5th to 9th playing like €rap means Jose blew it, and his 2m bonus. Game over, for this season anyway.

ENIC OUT.

OK then! Can you just remind me how many years of CL football we’ve had at the new lane?

We’re not, which is why we don’t pay top class wages. My point in response to Noel Whelan’s quote is that is the reason top class players don’t join us. It’s got nothing to do with being out of the CL. We’ve been in the CL for years and not once in that time have we signed a top class player.

It’s current thinking. Where’s the evidence we’re paying top wages? Even Kane, our superstar top earner is only on £200k. He’d be earning a lot more elsewhere. Eriksen’s reported Inter salary is £260k a week. Do you think Levy offered him anywhere close to that? We’re not even matching Inter’s wages, let alone the elite clubs like Real and Barca. That’s just a fact.

Well at least we can (covid aside) pay top wages for the right players now. Stop old lane thinking mate.

I wouldn’t call Ndombele top class. Hopefully will become it and has the potential, but not yet. The elite clubs (that pay bigger wages than us) weren’t beating down Lyon’s door for him. If they had’ve been, we’d have missed out.

I said recently that if you look at our remaining nine games there are several banana skins waiting for us.We realistically need to win 7-8 of those matches. We have two London derbies, the first game against Utd.and also an away game at Sheffield Utd.which could easily see us drop points.
CL football next season is extremely unlikely and that would impact any transfer business plus the real possiblity that Kane will look to leave.I hope I am wrong, but we have to face reality.

No. Top class players don’t sign for Tottenham cos we don’t pay top class wages.

I think 5th would do it cos of City’s ban. As long as it’s not overturned.

Talk about stating the bleeding obvious. How do these ‘pundits’ get paid. His comments apply equally to all the teams currently competing for the probably the 4th CL spot, but it matters more to us?

It would be a massive surprise if we qualified after the season we’ve had so far. It would also take a massive slip from Chelsea. It’s not going to happen, and that loan Levy took out was preparing for that as well.

We saw this coming years ago, hence why Spurs fans were fuming Levy didn’t sign players over 3 transfer windows when we were doing well. We cannot blame CV 19 for this season’s failings. Before the virus we were in free fall, we couldn’t buy a throw in, never mind a win. We might come out of this with a modicum of respectability, now we have Kane and Son back, but to get top 4 we must beat Utd.
