Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero has been linked with a move away from the club in recent months.

Clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City are keen on signing the 26-year-old Argentine international. He has established himself as one of the best defenders in the league since his move from Atalanta and it is no surprise that top clubs are keen on him.

TBR Football claims that Tottenham are hoping to agree on a new deal with him, and they will begin talks regarding his future in the New Year. The London club are prepared to offer him a bumper new contract to keep him at the club for the long term.

However, Romero is prioritising Champions League football and it will be interesting to see if the North London club can provide him with that platform. They have made a mixed start to the season and they need to secure a top-four finish to hold onto elite players like Romero.

Keeping him at the club without securing Champions League qualification could prove to be increasingly difficult. Clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City will be able to provide him with that platform and the player could easily be tempted to move on. He has already won the World Cup and Copa America with his country and he will look to win major trophies at club level now.

Tottenham will be hoping to compete for major trophies, and they will hope to compete in the Champions League regularly as well. They need to hold onto their best players in order to match up to the European elite. Romero is undoubtedly an indispensable asset for them, and it will be interesting to see if they can convince him to put pen to paper on a new deal.
