Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is ‘still assessing’ his situation at the club before signing a new contract amid huge European interest, according to reports.
Romero arrived at Spurs from Atalanta in the summer of 2022 and has become an integral player since then, making 111 appearances across all competitions.
The Argentina international — who has won World Cup and Copa America titles with his nation since joining Spurs — still has over two years to run on his current deal, which bags him £165k per week according to Capology.
However, Spurs are known to be keen on tying him down to a new deal.
According to TBR’s latest update, Spurs are aiming to begin negotiations in January, with the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan all ‘keeping tabs’ on Romero’s situation.
But things won’t be straightforward. TBR‘s report also states that Romero’s camp are ‘still assessing the situation’ at Spurs before committing to contract talks, with Champions League football ‘key to his future’.
Can Spurs secure UCL football Cristian Romero desires?
Whether or not Spurs will secure the Champions League football Romero desires is anyone’s guess.
The Lilywhites thrashed Manchester City 4-0 at the Etihad Stadium recently. However, that is their only win in five across all competitions.
In the Premier League, Spurs have endured a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich and a 1-1 draw against Fulham — both at home — either side of that memorable victory.
Ange Postecoglou is starting to come under pressure after failing to win back-to-back Premier League games since September, sitting seventh in the table.
And yet, Spurs remain just three points adrift of the Champions League places and only five points behind Arsenal and Chelsea in joint-second.
They have a squad with more than enough talent to go on a strong run, especially if the likes of Son Heung-min and Dominic Solanke can stay injury-free and find some consistency.
Romero will also have a part to play in whether or not Spurs will make the top four once he returns from a toe injury.
