Tottenham Agree £52m Deal to Sign Jan Paul van Hecke

Tottenham have agreed a £52m deal to sign Brighton centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke, with the transfer confirmed by David Ornstein on X.

Ornstein – whose transfer reporting carries as much weight as anything in the industry – posted the confirmation, with Fabrizio Romano also verifying the agreement according to Football365. The fee represents a notable climbdown from Brighton’s initial £60–70m valuation, with at least one earlier Spurs bid having been rejected before both clubs reached terms.

How the Deal Got Done

Van Hecke had one year remaining on his Brighton contract and had shown little appetite for an extension, leaving the club with a straightforward choice: sell now at a premium or watch him walk for nothing in twelve months. Spurs understood the leverage and applied it. We have previously covered the background to this pursuit, including the role De Zerbi’s arrival at Spurs played in accelerating the player’s interest in the move.

Sky Sports report that Van Hecke only wanted to join Tottenham, and that he views De Zerbi as a father figure – which tells you most of what you need to know about why the manager keeps drawing players toward him. Van Hecke made 50 appearances under De Zerbi at Brighton, establishing himself as one of the more aggressive, front-foot centre-backs in the Premier League.

What This Means for the Squad

Van Hecke is expected to be Spurs’ third defensive signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson on free transfers – a back-line overhaul that has been deliberate and, so far, reasonably efficient. The more complicated question is what the £52m outlay means for Cristian Romero, with ESPN reporting that the depth at centre-back and the size of the spend increases the likelihood of the captain leaving – Atlético Madrid among the clubs credited with interest.

Medicals and paperwork are reported as a formality. Whether the window ends there or whether Sandro Tonali follows is a separate conversation – but for now, this one is done.
