Tottenham star singled out for ‘stupid’, ‘dreadful’ performance vs Arsenal

By Mehdi Gokal -

Clive Allen slammed Tottenham Hotspur player Emerson Royal on talkSPORT after he was sent off against Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the North London derby on Saturday afternoon.

Emerson’s tackle on Gabriel Martinelli in the second half , according to the former Tottenham star, was “dreadful” and “stupid.”

Arsenal led 2-1, but Spurs were still in the game until Emerson made a terrible tackle on fellow Brazilian Martinelli, resulting in him being sent off.

Clive Allen, who was covering the North London derby for talkSPORT, has slammed Emerson. He said:

“That is a ridiculous challenge. Raises his boot, six studs, and he’s just jeopardised the whole game for his club in this north London derby.

“Emerson doesn’t play it anywhere near the ball, he just flips Martinelli’s legs from underneath him. It’s dreadful, a stupid challenge and the referee Anthony Taylor is spot on with his decision. That is crazy.”

Emerson has not had the best start to his Tottenham career, and his red card against Arsenal may jeopardise his chances of playing regularly for Antonio Conte’s side when he returns from suspension.

Clive, like the rest of us, is not an Emerson Royal enthusiast!

The one low kick 40 yards up the middle straight to Arse was U12 level.

Apart from his reaction saves, he is a pretty average keeper. Can’t kick or throw long accurately, looks flakey with the ball at his feet and doesn’t command his area from crosses and corners. He has developed an annoying fault where he pushes balls that he can’t hold back in front of goal, instead of around a post.

Effective captains are usually midfielders or central defenders rather than keepers. But Spurs don’t even seem to have on-field leaders who can galvanise and motivate their teammates; I had thought PEH would take on that role, but he seems less assertive now than when he arrived.

It’s a shame that he wasn’t injured. He makes the odd great save but that’s his Job. Please don’t start with the Captaincy Chestnut.

Charlie is currently playing in defence attack and midfield. What I am hoping for is that midfielders and attackers can interchange ..hopefully keeping us on the front foot..rather than getting twinkle toed all around our defence which includes the midfield which currently backs off to our 18 yard line . For me this is a tactic which doesn’t work …AFC could have had 5/6 today.

While Emerson clearly was beyond being a liability, Lloris had already gifted the game away and handed the initiative to the home team. My concern is more about the total lack of Spence sense when it comes to Conte’s subs. I mean Docherty’s pass to an unmarked Arsenal player centre field late on was a great example of mediocrity triumphing yet again. What on earth can Spence do to get a run out? The game was lost. Conte’s head was already on the next game mid-week.

Not really needed to defend, an extra body in there who can pick a pass would be an improvement. More of a deep lying ten. With richy as a central presence in the box, which kane hasn’t really done for years now.

How about having a bigger midfield and stop our flanks being battered ..we will ruin Charlie by making him defend play in midfield and attack..that said Saliba the AFC CB seemed content to defend our amazing counters on his own ..unconvinced by the inhaler free counter attacking game..eh Jurgen.

I’m wondering why not drop kane into mf and use Ricky as the hold up guy for son. As an actual plan rather than kane dropping into mf and having no one but fing Royale to pass to?
