Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the Barcelona defender Eric Garcia.

They have registered interest in signing the 24-year-old central defender along with Chelsea. However, the player has no intention of leaving Barcelona anytime soon. He has agreed to sign a new contract with the Spanish club, which will come as a blow to the North London outfit.

Eric Garcia set for new deal

Graeme Bailey told TBR Football: “At one point in the summer with Garcia’s contract expiring, there was real interest with Chelsea and Spurs both keen.

“He is a class act and has Premier League experience; he ticks a lot of boxes. However, Garcia has since become a big player under Hansi Flick, and he is not going anywhere. I am told in recent weeks, his people have confirmed that a new deal is imminent.”

They were hoping to bring Garcia back to the Premier League. He has shown his quality in La Liga with Barcelona, and there is no doubt that he could have been a quality addition for Tottenham.

Garcia has played in the Premier League with Manchester City in the past. He managed to win the league title with them as well. Apart from his quality, his winning experience could have been invaluable for Tottenham.

It will be interesting to see if they decide to move on to other targets now.

Tottenham are already well-stocked in defence, so signing another central defender would be surprising. They should look to improve in the other areas of the squad. They need a midfield controller, a wide attacker and a reliable centre forward.

It remains to be seen how the situation develops.

Tottenham have lost their way after an impressive start to the season, and it will be interesting to see if they can bounce back strongly. Signing the right players in January will certainly help them improve.
