Tottenham are planning to sign Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis at the end of the season.

The London club have an option to sign the player for a fee of around £21 million. They secured a first-refusal agreement with Real Betis when they sold Giovani Lo Celso to the Spanish club.

As per Football Insider, the 23-year-old midfielder recently signed an extension with the Spanish outfit, but that will not affect his release clause.

Tottenham need more quality and depth in the midfield, and the 23-year-old should prove to be a quality acquisition. He will add physicality and defensive steel in the middle of the park. The 18-cap United States International has shown his quality in La Liga and he could be an important player for Tottenham in the Premier League as well.

The North London club need to add more quality to the side if they want to compete in the Champions League regularly and fight for trophies. The La Liga defensive midfielder has the quality to improve them. He will help them tighten up at the back and his arrival will also allow the creative players to operate with more freedom. Tottenham have looked quite vulnerable defensively this season and a reliable defensive midfielder could make a world of difference for them.

The midfielder could be excited about the possibility of competing in the Premier League next season. It remains to be seen how the situation develops. Even though Tottenham have an agreement with Real Betis over the fee, they will still need to convince the player regarding the move.

It remains to be seen whether the 23-year-old is ready to join the North London club at the end of the season. They are unlikely to be able to provide him with Champions League football after a disappointing first half of the season.
